Best money I've spent in a very long time on a professional text!

This book is an excellent resource for elementary math teachers as they strive to provide a strong foundation of instruction for students. This book is very teacher friendly and I have been able to pose many of the example problems to my students to gain more information about what my students know and don't know. I really like the way the authors provided a grade span to their example problems to show how a Core concept can be presented and taught at three different levels. This is also a great resource for differentiating instruction for your students. Best money I've spent in a very long time on a professional text.

The book begins with a Prologue that emphasizes Secretary Christopher’s long-standing interest in speeches as an instrument of public policy and the decision making behind this often overlooked aspect of statecraft. It also describes how the Secretary was offered the position by President-elect Clinton, the state of affairs as he found them when he took office, and his strategy and plans for U.S. foreign policy in the post-Cold War period. An epilogue recounts the Secretary’s decision to return to private life, offers his insights on the challenges facing the United States in the international arena in the years ahead, and sets forth some suggestions for future policy makers.

If not as colorful as the memoirs of Kissinger, or as gossipy as those of Baker, the headnotes to Christopher's speeches reflect the author's hallmark of polite, analytic emollience when he recollects China's political truculence and commercial pirating, Bosnia's destruction, the Israeli/Palestinian negotiations, repeated Iraqi fire drills, or the atom bomb's proliferation. Good content - different style

The content of In the Stream of History is excellent - but one may find the style of the book awkward. It is based on speeches given by Warren Christopher - so the speeches (as they were given) and insight into their preparations are given - which is an excellent contribution to foreign policy practices, but makes for a difficult read. Reading a speech and hearing a speech at the moment of their importance are obviously two different things.

This is a more complex book than meets the eye. I thought it would be about the quite r4ecent scientific and medical investigations of the human microbiome, which increasingly looks central to human health. It is that, but this is a highly personal book that mixes health of the earth--soil--and health of a person, sort of an inside soil and outside soil, literally grounded in the authors' garden in Seattle. The book presents equal parts personal experience and hard science, which is described clearly and should be accessible to readers--both soil and human microbiomes are far, far more complex than most people appreciate.

The book starts with a description of the authors' (the authors are married, and both have extensive backgrounds in science) rebuilding poor soil in their Seattle house, to make a garden. To be brief (the book describes this very well and gardeners will like it) it quickly became fertile and growth exploded, as did unanticipated populations of birds, insects and visiting mammals, all stemming from an enriched microbiota (which includes bacteria, fungi and other folks). A healthy soil has a healthy microbiota, every bit as complex as the above ground ecosystem parts; the point is that healthy soil produces healthy food--the book is explicitly advocating changes in farming.

This connects with Bikle's cancer and experience. At first this doesn't seem relevant, but it gradually introduces the human microbiome in all its complexity, and its impact on health, and how manipulating it can have good consequences. Recent patterns have agriculture dousing land with pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer, building up resistance in harmful bacteria and impoverishing the soil by cropping practices. And so with dousing patients with chemicals--works wonders but may alter or kill off the microbiota and in the long term do more harm than good. This book makes a very solid case, and also notes that big pharma and agribusiness will fight it, as they always have, because they have so much to lose. Think of this book as an attempt to raise consciousness. If you read it through, your views will change, and if not a convert to the lifestyle advocated, you'll at least have to credit it as having some compelling evidence behind it.

So: a healthier future will require much more awareness of microbes and taking them into account as assets in body and soil.

A Most Memorable Read

The Hidden Half of Nature is about microbes; and life, or more accurately about perhaps everything tangible and nothing we can see. For quite some time I didn't view the subject matter as being of great import and cosigned this title to the bottom of my "read one day" list. What a mistake. This book was, without a doubt, one of the most beautifully written, well documented, and enthralling stories I have recently read. I am not prone to hyperbole, but the brilliant blend of scientific fact with compelling personal insight is flawlessly accomplished. Rarely do I feel my scientific knowledge base has significantly expanded in harmony with what I can only describe as a flush of spirituality. My only minor caution to prospective readers is the risk of being compellingly drawn to gardening and the attendant aches that plague the novice tiller of the earth. Otherwise, this is a must read book for lovers of science, discovery and awe at the hidden universe that surrounds us and is the core of life itself.

Our Ancient Hidden Allies

This remarkable and fascinating book really opened my eyes about the significance of a term I had heard before, but didn't fully appreciate-- microbiome. Starting from the story of why composting makes soil healthy, the authors take us to the roots of plants to learn that plants have a way of communicating with the bacteria and fungi in the soil. In this way plants attract the microbes they need to grow and stay healthy. We also learn that modern chemical fertilizers are destroying the soil microbiome so that crops are less nutritious and the soil's ability to produce crops declines.
Then we learn about the human microbiome and find that the microbes in our bodies outnumber our own cells by many times, and that our gut is an amazing system analogous to the root system in plants. Our own health is strongly affected by our microbiome, and that antibiotics must be used carefully in order not to decimate our inner allies. Indeed, our outdated view of 'germs' is leading to the rapid evolution of superbugs that can resist most antiseptics and drugs. Many chronic diseases are a consequence of poorly developed, unhealthy microbiomes.
The message of this book is that much more needs to be learned about the hidden world of nature, because even though we can't see it, our lives depend on it.

A Fresh Look at Marcus Crassus and the Battle of Carrhae

This is an excellent book that makes a well documented effort to rehabilitate the reputation of Marcus Crassus, the Roman statesman and general who lost the pivotal battle with an army of the Parthian Empire near Carrhae in northern Mesopotamia. The battle, in 53 BC, was significant because it marked the beginning of a prolonged and bloody struggle between west and east, Europe and Asia, that continues to this day. The conflict, then as now, was as much about the clash of competing cultures as it was about land and military supremacy.

Crassus was generally vilified by contemporary and subsequent authors and historians who were, according to Mr. Sampson, looking for a scapegoat to explain the worst defeat of Roman arms since Hannibal. This was made easier because Crassus died in the battle and was not around to defend his reputation. Since he was exceedingly rich, he was also an easy target for envy. Sampson posits, based on the available evidence, that Crassus was not a bad general, as common opinion would have it; after all he had some years before saved Rome from the scourge of Spartacus, who had, till Crassus took the field, defeated every Roman commander sent against him. Crassus was a member of the triumvirate that ruled Rome at the time, comprising he, Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great. He did not rise to this level of power and influence along with two of the most famous men in Roman history by being in any wise mediocre. Rather, he lost the battle of Carrhae to a superior Parthian general, who was himself subsequently assassinated by a jealous king. He was thus deprived of the opportunity to follow up his victory at Carrhae - and his reputation, too, suffered as a result. Thereafter, the First Parthian War deteriorated into stalemate. What's more, Crassus death destabilized the government of the Roman Republic; the war that followed between Caesar and Pompey led to the end of the Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire.

Mr. Sampson explores the history of Rome up to the time of the war with Parthia and, to the extent possible with the sparse sources available, also explores the history of Parthia, something that most historians neglect. He probes the contradictions among sources and endeavors to draw the most rational conclusions, free to the extent possible from the anti-Crassus bias that infects most of those sources.

I am no historian myself, but merely a lifetime student of history. Still, to my not altogether inexperienced eye, Sampson makes a good case for Crassus as well as the historical fulcrum the battle of Carrhae represents. His writing is aimed at and accessible to the layman; his extensive notes and appendices are at the back of the book for those interested in his methodology. He offers a fresh look at otherwise familiar events and, for this reason, his book is a good read for anyone interested in this period of history.

Like most e-books in my experience, this one suffers from flaws in editing. For some reason the transition from paper to digital formats seems to be an occasion for negligent editorial oversight. Given the increasing popularity of digital publishing, this is a lamentable trend. While I find this kind of sloppy editing annoying, in this case it does not detract substantially from the quality of the book. Indeed, I suspect most people are not so picky about such things as I am. But as I read more books on my Kindle PaperWhite, bad editing is becoming a pet peeve of mine.

Exciting account of Carrhae, with useful background of the Roman Republic and Parthian Empire leading to and following the clash

Sampson does a superb job in giving the reader a background to the Roman-Parthian wars during the Roman Republic with a focus on the events and implications of the campaign against the Parthian Empire led by Crassus in 53 BC.

Not only is this an exciting account the actual climactic battle at Carrhae, but includes useful background on events in the Roman Republic and Parthia that led to what Sampson notes as an inevitable clash between the two empires. For example, Sampson does an excellent job setting the general security-focused mindset in Rome that lasted from harrowing defeat during the Punic wars against Hannibal. Sampson also lays out the general players in the East and how they evolved, such as the Seleucids, Armenians, Bactrians, etc…providing a useful and informative background to their evolution and interaction with Rome. As Sampson gets closer to the Battle of Carrhae and the aftermath, he pulls in additional useful context from Cicero, Pompey the Great, Julius Caesar, etc, who were all directly or indirectly involved in the campaign.
A couple of other main highlights:

• Sampson does an excellent job coming up with well-informed, likely outcomes in areas that are less documented (such as Parthian history and internal politics.)
• Sampson provides an objective review or Marcus Lincinius Crassus and his role in the Roman Republic, along with a strong characterization of Parthian general Surena and his ability to get a strategic advantage and win against the advancing Roman forces.

This book should be standard reading for those looking to gain a better understanding of Rome’s geopolitical undertakings in the East, and also for those that are studying history of conflict between the West and Middle East…The campaign, an offensive against Parthia led by Marcus Licinius Crassus and defended by Surena, is an important part of ancient history, which quite relevant given is location in Syria/Turkey. The conflict—even if it was over two thousand years ago—undoubtedly left a mark that impacts current geopolitics in the region.

Only minor compliant would be a few small typos in the text (hardcover version), such as an unnecessary “_” and one spacing issue.

No detailed examples or answers.

This workbook supplements the Varian textbook, Intermediate Microeconomics. The textbook focuses on the conceptual and this workbook focuses on the mathematical applications of microeconomics. There are numerous problems for each chapter that range from easy to difficult. Unfortunately, the workbook only has the even answers in the back and no explanations for the answers. I believe that the workbook would be extremely valuable if only it had explanations for the answers. Instructors using the workbook do have the detailed explanations to the questions.

those godawful examples

i agree with all the other people when I say this is one of the worst review books I've ever read. The author uses awkward examples to explain concepts...and what is wrong with those names? shirley sixpack? Ambrose? Vanna Boogie? How about Author Dull? or Iam Perplexed? Even answers are given but it doesnt show how it was derived. And on top of that, I am positive the book contains number of errors. This makes it even more confusing for people trying to learn micro. Stay away from that orange book if you can.

This is an excellent workbook to accompany Varian's Intermediate Microeconomics. The reviewers who claim that there are numerous mistakes have clearly done many of the problems incorrectly. In the 5 years that I have used this book, I have found a very small number of mistakes, mostly typographical. Yes, it's a book that has tricky questions. It requires a deep understanding of economic problems, but the point of each example is to illustrate one aspect of the economic concept. If you can get through these problems, you will have a very good understanding of the logic of microeconomics.
