About the Author

Clyde Robert Bulla is the author of over fifty books for children including The Secret Valley and The Story of Valentine s Day. He has been writing since 1946 when he published his first book, The Donkey Cart. Mr. Bulla was the first recipient of the Southern California Council on Children s Literature award for distinguished contribution to the field. He lives in Los Angeles, California.

Thomas B. Allen is the author of numerous history books, including George Washington, Spymaster and Remember Valley Forge. A frequent contributor to Smithsonian Magazine, National Geographic, Military History Quarterly, Military History, Naval History, the U.S. Naval Institute's Proceedings, and other publications, he lives in Bethesda, Maryland.

A Real Gem

Nine-year-old Gregory's going through a tough time: his dad lost his job recently, he just moved to a new neighborhood, he switched schools, he didn't get to celebrate his birthday this year, and the one bright spot of everything -- the bedroom his parents added on to the house just for him (Gregory's never had his own room before) -- he has to share with his 20-year-old slacker Uncle Max, who just moved in. To make things worse, the kids at school aren't exactly standing in line to be his friends and his family doesn't have a lot of time for him now.

Things start to look up when Gregory discovers an abandoned chalk factory next door. Under the rubble are boxes and boxes of leftover chalk and Gregory starts drawing on the walls. What he draws and what happens when others take notice is the story.

Discussion:

This is one of the best beginning chapter books I've read in a long time. There are no 50 cent words and the sentences are short but the paragraphs pull you along so you'd never notice it. What makes this book so unique are the topics it skids around.

Gregory is a very frustrated little boy. His parents both work and can't afford to give him the art supplies, clothes, garden space, etc that his friends have access to. His uncle is more of a spoiled new brother than an adult and neither he nor Gregory's parents take much interest in Gregory's concerns and activities. His new teacher is nice but he's having trouble fitting in at school. There is no place in his house that is private. Nothing horrible ever happens but little things build up and although he doesn't know how to say it, Gregory's pent-up frustrations need an outlet. (He's not the only child in this book with this problem: a classmate, Ivy, also has difficulty putting words what's bothering her.)

In a typical beginner reader book an adult would take notice and step in and find a way to make Gregory feel special. Instead the author has Gregory discover an unlimited supply of chalk and 3 walls of the chalk factory to draw on. Now that Gregory has a place that he can make his own, everything else is more bearable. When he finds that he's the only one in his class without a yard to grow a garden in, he simply draws one on the walls outside.

It doesn't take long before others catch on to what he's doing, but by then Gregory has a little more control over his feelings (he no longer feels like kicking things). Again, Bulla is realistic: Nothing fantastic happens but things work out anyway and the ending is more satisfying because of it.

A Garden is in the Eye of the Beholder

Three burned and sooty walls prove an irresistable lure to a lonely 9-year-old boy. Friendless in a new school in a decaying neighborhood, and disrespected by his unemployed young uncle, Gregory discovers the remains of a chalk factory behind his
cement-filled back yard. Who says he can't have a garden like the other kids in his class--it's in the eye and the heart of the gardener, after all. In this case the gardener is a budding
artist, who wants to recreate the beauty of nature and living things in this--his only private space. Even his skeptical parents discover that their son has talent, thanks to his conscientious teacher.
Bulla's literary strokes are characterized by short, simple sentences and minmal kid dialogue. The author's canvas depicts a world of pre teen loneliness, peer pressure and the innate need for social
appreciation. But who will prove brave enough to defy the crowd? This is a good book for young readers who have suffered the trauma of moving or familial rejection, with good insight into the artistic temperament.

I really liked this book because it was about a kid named Gregory who moves to a new town with his mother and father. It is bad enough moving without having any friends, but not making any new ones is pretty bad too. Everyone was given some seeds to plant a garden. But at his new house he doesn't have much of a yard so he can't make a garden. Behind his house is a burned down chalk factory, so he draws a garden. If you want to find out if he makes any friends read this book.

Newspaper Design Handbook 5th Edition----An Effective and Well Presented Handbook on the Subject!

Simple, clear, concise, and accurate presentation of the elements of newspaper design. Concepts are well defined. Author is a clear communicator and his writing style augments the value of the information he is presenting. There are ample visual designs presented in is book and elements of typology, template formatting, page design, font sizing, and visual organization are especially useful for beginners in newspaper design. Question and answer quizes reinforce the concepts in the material. Have no doubt, author Tim Harrower is an excellent writer and he presents key concepts with verbal and visual support. This book is especially good for beginning visual media design related to creating newspapers. It is something that both journalism and visual media teachers can use for their beginning students in highschool and junior college classroom situations. A big plus for this Newspaper Designer Handbook. Beginning issues present in this handbook can be applied to later visual media design and may prove useful in understanding beginning concepts in InDesign software by Adobe.

I stumbled onto a YouTube video from a high school newspaper sponsor saying that this is required reading. I bought it. It far exceeds my greatest hopes. The content is complete. The information is clear. It is concise. It is precise.

Buy one of these, download a copy of Scribus and get going. Whether you are working on an existing school, college or community paper, or want to start your own niche newspaper; this book is every bit as essential as a printing press. Some good tricks, but this book is outdated (and expensive).

That this book is outdated should come as no surprise to anyone, really. The newspaper industry is dying and needs some new ideas; this book just shows how it's always been done. This book is a good primer for someone new to the industry so they can see an overview for how newspapers have worked in the past and teaches a few tricks about headlines and art placement, but he still talks about paper dummies, xacto knives and film. So not cutting edge, but maybe worth a peak if you're in the industry and can find it for less than the $90 or so investment it's asking for.

Additional chapters focus on shaken baby syndrome and Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, and the book includes a new chapter on postpartum depression. The authors include profiles of several notorious cases, including Susan Smith and Andrea Yates. They also discuss issues related to abortion and euthanasia, and conclude by suggesting preventive measures to child abuse and therapeutic rehabilitation.

Exploring a social tragedy from psychological, sociological, and criminological perspectives, the authors attempt to answer the many questions that arise from these crimes against our most vulnerable, offering readers a thought-provoking resource that is sure to encourage further research and inquiry.

About the Author

Lita Linzer Schwartz, Ph.D., is a graduate of Vassar College, Temple University, and Bryn Mawr College, and is Distinguished Professor Emerita of The Pennsylvania State University’s Abington College (n�e Ogontz Campus). She also holds a diplomate in forensic psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology. She has received three awards from Penn State: Outstanding Teacher from the College of Education Alumni (1981–1982), Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching from the University (1982), and Career Achievement award from the College of Education (1992). Dr. Schwartz is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Academy of Forensic Psychologists as well as a member of the International Council of Psychologists and the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. In addition to teaching, she is actively involved in a number of writing projects on topics as varied as adoptive and surrogate parenting, cults and sects, media violence and its impact, gifted children, and female artists and photographers.

Natalie Isser, Ph.D., is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, and is Professor Emerita of The Pennsylvania State University’s Abington College. She is a member of the American Historical Association, The Western Society for the Study of French History, and the Delaware Valley Association of Modern European Historians. In addition to the books and articles coauthored with Dr. Schwartz, she has written on French anti-Semitism, human rights, and French public opinion and diplomacy during the Second Empire. She teaches part time and has continued research on a variety of topics such as American melodrama, movies, and history; and the social and cultural roots of American populism.

Use this book to make initial contact, then look to other sources for progression of the relationship.

Alright Guys, I wanted to spend some time in this book before I reviewed it. So here is what my impressions were; First let me start by giving a bit of background. I am not a novice in the dating world. I'm in my mid thirties and have dated a lot of women conservatively probably into the 550 - 600 range since high school many years ago.

I would say that most of what this guy wrote was pretty spot on. He seems to have the initial contact and flirt dynamics, through text down pretty well. He knows about the "push and pull effect" in a beginning level relationship. However, he seems to be very poor in actual relationships from what I can gather. In other words, the book is useful to attempt to navigate the online dating environment and trying to get you to the in person meet and greet point - which in and of itself is easily worth the cost of the book, and worth reading.

Especially for the young, inexperienced guys who are really confused by women and how they respond, or fail to respond, I would recommend this book to establish some basic rules to play the game by. Just understand that this is really only useful for initial contact and attempting to lock down first and second dates.

This author seems to be stuck in the player phase of dating, which he will eventually grow out of with age - But he is still young and has more to learn. This isn't discounting what he suggest about being funny, not being over eager to throw your heart at girl you haven't even met in person yet, or coming across as needy. He is correct in all of his advice on these topics.

For transitioning into actual relationships? Yeah, this book will not cut the mustard, nor was it really meant to. I would definitely get a couple of other books on the subject. I would probably recommend "models" by Mark Manson. It sort of picks up where this one leaves off. Lets face it, first and second dates get way old after a few years don't they? Use this as your online openers to make contact, then move into the next phase - the one not covered by this book.

A one-star book in four-star sheep's clothing

I was looking for some good ideas to make text conversations more fun, more appealing. What can you do differently with short text messages to spark interest? For a Kindle book with so many good reviews, I thought the price was reasonable.

My first mistake was not clicking "Take a look inside" and reading a sample. The very first sentence is, "I am better than you at texting." Ok, fairly large, uninformed assumption, but go on. His reasoning for being better: "I started texting in Asia about five years before it even arrived in the US (sic)" - which gives what advantage, typing faster? - "and I understand the dynamics of relationships like a chef understands alcoholism." Um, what? Chefs have nothing to do with alcohol. So you...don't understand the dynamics of relationships?

Since I purchased the book, I reluctantly read on. The author's grammar, punctuation and spelling are written at a remedial level. And he uses profanity throughout, often in derogatory terms about women. (He says 'b-tch' twelve times. While he is often trying to be playful, this is completely disrespectful to women and to the intelligence of the reader.)

Here's an example of one of his text messaging conversations, from which you are supposed to glean some sort of quality communicative approach:

"Cherie: Hey Mike you going out tonight?
Me: Going out with Lacy
Cherie: Oh...going out with the cougar
Me: Jesus Cherie, you are such a b-tch!"

Why any girl wants to engage in conversation with this guy is a mystery.

What's truly incredible are the sections indicated in the Kindle edition that apparently several others have highlighted. Like this section, highlighted 276 times:

"You see, the important thing is always portraying confidence; of course we are going to say the wrong things. Of course we are going to screw up, but if we accept this as inevitable and don't really give a s***. She will sense that confidence and feel nothing but attraction."

Where's the rest of that, "...if we accept this as inevitable" sentence? Oh, it's over there, after that period.

While there may be a point or two in this book about a guy displaying confidence by not apologizing or that you shouldn't text someone the moment you get their number, it's difficult to filter these points out because the book has such poor grammar and punctuation, it's unreadable. And I'm not sure what type of person would be receptive to the author's example texts but it certainly isn't anyone with any class, self respect or post-primary education.

At most, this book deserves two stars: one to match the quality of the writing and content and a second as pity for the author. But I don't pity him because he has my money. So...one star. Add to that a big question mark as to how so many people gave this four and five stars.

Short but well worth the price!!

I was a little skeptical about this book but bought it and read it in 2 days, took notes, reread (I needed help) and applied. It works, his advice while seeming at first read 'game'ish', works once applied. I'm a late 30's recently single guy and this book has paid for itself numerous times. He not only explains what to be texting but the psychology behind why you are texting it, like it or not, but once you have success with it you will like it. Well worth the price of a round of drinks you'd spend with some girl you have no chance with.
My first review, and I had to get off my iphone to give it.

About the Author
Kevin Tumlinson was born in Wild Peach, Texas, during the early 70s. Which means he had practically nothing to do for the first 18 years of his life.
That meant he was free from outside stimulus, which gave him a creative edge. He spent his days roaming the back woods and open pastures and abandoned junk piles of Wild Peach, getting into a lot of trouble and building a rich inner world that comes in real handy today.
Kevin is the author of dozens of novels and novellas, including his popular Citadel science fiction trilogy and his ongoing Sawyer Jackson contemporary fantasy series.
Kevin was the winner of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy award, as well as a two-time winner of the Danny Lee Lawrence Award for Fiction.
In addition to writing and publishing, Kevin is the host of the Wordslinger Podcast (wordslingerpodcast.com)--a weekly interview-format show in which Kevin talks to some of the most interesting and upwardly mobile entrepreneurs around. Kevin makes a regular habit of coaching and helping other authors, entrepreneurs and would-be authors improve their craft, build or grow their business, and generally just make their lives better through writing.

Excellent!!!!! Top notch writing!

I found the first book of this trilogy on manybooks.net. Amazing book, very well written. As soon as I finished it, I bought Vol 2, another great book, so I finished the series with Vol 3. I very highly recommend these books to any sci-fi fan! I'll be looking up the author's other works ASAP!

The Plot Thickens and Offers Hope

I purchased both First Colony and Paths in Darkness, and read them back-to-back. Paths of Darkness provided sufficient back story to provide context but didn't rehash the first book...which I can totally appreciate. Since I read them back-to-back in one sitting, it's a little more difficult to offer a review of Paths of Darkness independent of First Colony. Tumlinson is craftily revealing sub-plots and introducing a few more characters but he's doing it in such a seemingly effortless and controlled way without trying to do so much that you're left scratching your head about how he's going to wrap all this up in a third and final book. Thoroughly enjoyed 'em both and am really looking forward to book 3.

Migration has always been a fundamental human activity, yet little collaboration exists between scientists and social scientists examining how it has shaped past and contemporary societies. This innovative volume brings together sociocultural anthropologists, archaeologists, bioarchaeologists, ethnographers, paleopathologists, and others to develop a unifying theory of migration. The contributors relate past movements, including the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain and the Islamic conquest of Andaluc�a, to present-day events, such as those in northern Ethiopia or at the U.S.-Mexico border. They examine the extent to which environmental and social disruptions have been a cause of migration over time and how these migratory flows have in turn led to disruptive consequences for the receiving societies.

A Most Thoroughly Detailed Account of Aquinas' Life

Torrell has provided the philosophical community with a most thoroughly detailed account of one of the greatest thinkers to ever walk this planet.
From the youth of Aquinas to his death, Torrell takes his reader on a historical journey through the life, events, thoughts, and works of St. Thomas Aquinas. Torrell uses the best resources available, and painstakingly documents all his sources. What is more, if certain things have been attributed to legend or mere 'story telling for the sake of story telling,' Torrell makes his reader aware of this fact. Thus, his research is honest, and quite detailed.
Every dispute between Aquinas and the Church or other clergy is included. Aquinas' years in Paris are detailed, the things he taught, the people he associated with, his travels, his writings, his habits (which have been documented), his writing methods, etc. all are detailed in this account. In fact, I do not think there is one stone left unturned that can actually be turned in the life of Aquinas, that Torrell has not touched.
Toward the end of this work, which it should be pointed out is written and organized in a nice chronological fashion, Torrell makes mention of those groups who after Aquinas' death formed cults in their following of Aquinas. Moreover, I enjoyed Torrell's account of Aquinas because it was real. What I mean by that is Torrell did not elevate Aquinas to an 'other than human' level and put him high on a pedestal. Rather, Torrell painted a picture of the real Aquinas, warts and all.
If you are wanting a detailed account of Aquinas and his whole life, works, events, etc. then this is the only text you may ever need (although there are others available which would be very helpful as well - i.e. James Weisheipl's account "Friar Thomas D'Aquino, which has been considered the standard biography). I highly recommend Torrell's work and wished I could have given it another star!

Superb technical achievment

Torrell's book is a two-fold masterpiece, but it is not for the faint-of-intellect. Die-hard Thomists will find the historical exegesis of scholarship on Aquinas' life and work to be the most fundamentally rigorous to date. Interspersed within this technical exposition are invaluable insights into the person of Aquinas as a man of faith first and foremost. For me, this book was a joy to read and I am utilizing it in a graduate seminar I will be teaching on Aquinas. That being said, I must warn the non-Thomist reader that they may find this book dry at times in its extreme historical exposition. The best approach to this book for the average reader is to skim through to find the gems contained within. Hence, I highly recommend this book to fans of Thomas Aquinas and cannot wait for the translation of Torrell's second volume to appear.

Bob M. Fennis works as an Professor in Consumer Behavior at the Department of marketing at Groningen University, the Netherlands. His research interests include persuasion, social influence processes and the dynamics of "automatic" consumer behavior. His research focuses on such issues as the effectiveness of marketing and selling techniques, advertising effects, and nonconscious influences on consumer goal pursuit and purchase behavior.

Wolfgang Stroebe is Professor of Social Psychology at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He is a former president of the European Association of Social Psychology, a Fellow of numerous psychological societies (e.g., BPS, APS) and co-editor (with Miles Hewstone) of the European Review of Social Psychology. One of his major research interests is strategies of attitude and behaviour change, and he has published widely on this topic.

Extrememly interesting subject, NEEDS correct page numbers for in class reference.

I rented the Kindle version of this textbook. It proved to be an extremely interesting subject. The textbook has numerous experiment citations and comprehensible diagrams. HOWEVER, during class, referencing page numbers was SUCH a hassle. The textbook only has table of contents with links to chapters, NO PAGES.

I didn't give the book 3 stars because the content is really very good BUT, something has to be done about the page numbers!
