good cookbook

This will be a gift (along with 2 other children's cookbooks and some kitchen utensils of his own) for the grandson who likes to cook. The recipes look good but not too complex for a 9 year old, lots of colorful pictures, and I like that there's a picture of a boy on the cover. Lots of children's cookbooks only show pictures of girls. He likes to cook but doesn't like 'girly' stuff. He plays hockey and baseball, his favorite color is camouflage. His parents (both mom and dad) are teaching him by example that cooking and cleaning aren't woman's work.

Actually the recipes in this cookbook look so good I'm considering ordering another one for myself.

I was expecting recipes that kids could do, but most of these I wouldn't expect my 12 year old to make. Some of them are easy and I could assist them in making but for the most part, I would make these and have my kids help me with some of it. And a lot of these recipes have special specific ingredients. A 3-ingredient banana pancake would be more appropriate. Not hand made, made from scratch, all organic and gluten free, free-range pancakes. I need a cookbook with easy recipes that my kids can take the wheel while I stand back and supervise. Pigs in a blanket. Different ways to make a pb&j. Kid recipes. Not a meatball casserole. I does get 3 stars because I make some of these recipes and they are pretty good. But it's not a kid cookbook.

I purchased this as a gift for my sister-in-law and nephew. The book has LOTS of pictures, and uses symbols to denote recipe difficulty (for young ones or older kids) as well as color coding for types of recipes (lunch, snacks, desserts, breakfasts, etc.) Very kid and Mom friendly - I love it so much I just may end up purchasing another for myself (and I don't consider myself much of a cook!)

Ranges from fair to great

The author's Physics for Entertainment is one of the great puzzle books and one of the great physics books of the 20th century. The best puzzles in Figures for Fun live up to that standard, but most of them are weaker. Some of them are well-known, and others are dull demonstrations of elementary facts. Some are poorly worded (or perhaps poorly translated, I do not know Russian).

For one example, a problem states that four school clubs meet on January 1, one meets every other day thereafter, one every third day, one every fourth day and one every fifth day. Over the next 90 days, on how many did no club meet? The problem is okay, although not very imaginative, but the solution is just to mark off the days in Eratosthenes' sieve and count. This is tedious and teaches no number theory. A better answer for a puzzle book is to point out that no clubs will meet on prime days (starting with 0 for January 1 and going up to 89, counting 1 as a prime) except for 2, 3 and 5; but also no clubs will meet on days that are products of primes larger than 5 (49 and 77 are the only ones less than 90).

A number of simple problems, such as the sum of a doubling geometric series are repeated in a number of unimaginative ways. Another good number of problems are simple computations or trivial equations. Many of the best problems are taken from physics or engineering.

The Communist ideology and Russian nationalism in the problems is amusing at the distance of history, "millionaires" are greedy and stupid, but then, so are "peasants"; workers are smart, honest and wise. Foolishness and social problems of capitalist democracies are described reasonably accurately, for example misunderstanding genetics or making short-sighted environmental decisions, but there is no mention of the far more devastating errors the Soviet Union made in these areas.

Overall, this is still a pretty good puzzle book, with some great puzzles and writing, but also a lot of filler.

Some challenging puzzles to figure out!

Does your brain need a workout? Are you wondering what to do? Well this could be the book for you! Filled with a mixture of more than a hundred problems to solve this is a great collection that will take hours (days, weeks, months . . . ) to work through! Certainly not for young children, the range of activities is enough to keep the most ardent puzzler occupied and perplexed as they try to solve them. This is a great book for anyone who is looking for a challenge and, if you get too stuck, the author kindly also provided the answers at the end of each chapter!

Interesting from an historical point of view

Upfront: I am not a STEM kind of girl. I'm more an arts/literature/history kind of girl. That being said, I enjoyed most of this book. I will be honest in that I simply didn't understand a couple of these puzzles. However, I found the stories told to be interesting from an historical point of view in that Comrade Perelman was a Soviet scientist, famous in the USSR for writing books to help popularize science. The stories and examples told in this book demonstrate the prevailing Soviet mentality. The book was interesting and somewhat engaging, but I won't be putting it on anyone's Christmas list.

Arenas offers an engaging discussion of the 'Lusophone Transatlantic Matrix' in the community of Portuguese-speaking African nations and their relationship with Portugal and Brazil. The focus is on today's world of globalization, market-oriented economies and multiparty politics. Drawing from popular music, film, literature and other cultural achievements, the outcome of this study is a framework of interpretation of recent cultural phenomena and historical developments. It is an impressive book and a pleasure to read.

A Good, Yet Western Approach

No Way Down by Graham Bowley is a good book concerning the 2008 K2 Tragedy. I have read every book and account concerning this incident and feel this one deserves 4 out of 5 stars. After a brief chapter of trekking to Base Camp, we jump right into Camp IV and summit day. I'm not sure the reader is able to comprehend all of the emotions that assisted in creating the `summit fever' without understanding just how long most of the teams had been waiting for the summit attempt. In addition to the 2008 summit, there are a good number of previous and more historical ascents documented as well, especially concerning Art Gilkey that lead to the Gilkey Memorial. I do commend Bowley on his research into avalanches and seracs and his explanation of these items right when they need to be mentioned. There is a great epilogue that details the author's adventures travelling to interview as many of the survivors and family of the deceased. Bowley's own opinion into the conflicting, if not controversial accounts concerning the final moments of Gerard McDonnell are well documented and almost convince me. The only thing that is missing is (all of) the Sherpa's stories. Reading One Mountain Thousand Summits or Buried in the Sky tells more of their story and doesn't have the Western approach only. I would recommend this book in addition to the previous mentioned to really grasp this tragedy.

Short and sweet...but wish it was long and rich, frankly

No question you'll finish this book in a plane ride. The story is gripping and told with the velocity of a pulp fiction adventure story, and the "I can't believe this actually happened" factor will propel you right to the end. The author does a great job of organizing facts for an event he wasn't on site to experience (a critique I've noticed from others who prefer a Krakauerian perspective), and for the minimal time it takes to read, it's worth the effort.

That said, there is something really, really light about this book. I was absolutely surprised at how little of it is devoted to either the history of K2 or an analysis of the actual events, really anything that would give this book some girth. As it is, it's bare bones. Maybe it does take the perspective of an actual climber like Krakauer to make this sort of thing feel personal or real, or to give it some context. As it is, it almost feels like one of those "An Oral History of..." magazine articles, where everyone from a particular event is interviewed, and then their quotes are put in chronological order, with little more added. It's interesting, but it's also...flat, in a way.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this book doesn't stick with you. You'll read it, be enthralled for a couple hours by the "oh my god, how can this get worse" factor...and then it ends abruptly, and that was that.

Human weakness and strength

Graham Bowley manages to put you 'on the scene'. Even a reader with no particular interest in climbing will be fascinated by the extraordinary attraction that mighty mountains can have on some people and of the human side of the dramatic events that took place on K2 August 2008. These are the two main achievements by the the author who remarkably does not have a background in mountaineering. Fortunately Bowley has researched the events behind the book well and he writes superbly.

You meet a number of individuals most of them passionate about advanced mountain climbing. The Sherpas climb and carry
to make a living.
The agreed plan to coordinate the climb among the various teams soon falls apart as several of
the climbers seem to loose their judgement climbing towards the peak. The concern about your fellow climbers melts away, among some climbers, into thin air in the demanding climb towards the top of K2. An example:In spite of all planning several climbers keep going although they know that they will arrive late in the day and that climbing down the mountain in darkness will be seriously dangerous. This will expose them, their teams and probably other climbers to life threatening danger. This is proof of some climbers' mindboggling passion for the ultimate climb.
Descending the mountain proves to be a disaster for several climbers. The story shines a clear light on the individual
climbers and their personalities and their (in some cases) extraordinary behaviour. Some acts of true heroism are
simply remarkable.
Bowley makes no strong judgement calls but leaves that to the reader. As a non mountain climber you may get the impression that some of the deaths could, perhaps, have been avoided. But then only those who survived would know.
This book is on par with 'Into thin Air'.

About the Author
Kelly Blessinger is the Reference Assistant Coordinator at Louisiana State University (LSU) Libraries. In this role, she assists in the daily supervision and operation of the department. She organizes training for all new hires in the department and coordinates continuing education for the library. She served on the Library Mentoring Committee, the Library Faculty Policy Committee, the LSU Faculty Senate, and currently, the University Council on Women.

Paul Hrycaj is an Instruction and Reference Librarian at LSU. He has served on the American Library Association Instruction Section Planning Committee, the LSU Library Faculty Policy Committee, and the LSU Faculty Senate. Paul has been chair of and participated in numerous search committees and has given presentations to LSU Libraries’ faculty and staff on the process of hiring new faculty members.
