In Persons's middling third paranormal crime thriller to feature Minnesota FBI agent Bernadette Saint Clare (after Blind Rage), Saint Clair and her boss, Tony Garcia, look into the murder of pregnant, 16-year-old Lydia Dunton, found butchered in Paul Bunyan State Forest with her full-term fetus removed and now missing. To make matters worse for the investigators, the victim's father is a U.S. senator, Magnus Dunton, an outspoken critic of the bureau. The inverted red pentagram that marked the dead girl's head mysteriously vanishes soon after the corpse arrives at the morgue, leading to suspicions centering on a local coven. Saint Clare finds a similar case in Wisconsin as well as evidence Lydia visited the scene of that crime. While Saint Clare can see the world through the eyes of killers, this gift does little to enhance her role as a stock lead character, nor does it add much to the law enforcement routine. (May)

fun paranormal police procedural

In Paul Bunyan State Forest, Minnesota a hunter finds the butchered corpse of a teenage girl. FBI Agents Bernadette Saint Clare and Tony Garcia lead the investigation into the horrific homicide made worse by the culprit slicing open the victim's body to remove her nine month old fetus.

The fatality is Lydia Dunton, the found daughter of U.S. senator Magnus Dunton, who has made it publicly clear his scorn for the bureau even before his daughter's death and is even more outraged with the feds. On Lydia's head is an inverted red pentagram, but that somehow vanishes at the morgue. Conducting research into similar recent cases, Saint Clare discovers an identical murder in Wisconsin and proof that Lydia had been at that location recently.

The third Saint Clare Minnesota FBI paranormal police procedural (see BLIND RAGE and BLIND SPOT) is an exciting whodunit enhanced by the abuse of power of the grieving father. The investigation is fun to follow though it predominately goes by the sub-genre's standard operating procedures. What is interesting is Saint Clare's ability to "see" through the eyes of a killer; yet as with BLIND RAGE, this skill is for the most part irrelevant to solving the case. Still Fans will enjoy this entertaining Minnesota murder mystery.

Decent fast-paced thriller

The hero of Person's plots, Agent Bernadette Saint Clare, has a unique power to see through the eyes of a serial killer as he goes about his nefarious business. Bernadette's ability though, unlike earlier novels in the series, is not very relevant or crucial to the storyline.

The plot is definitely an exciting whodunit with a touch of supernatural genre. enhanced by the abuse of power of the grieving father. In spite of some inconsistencies in the story, the fans of fast-paced thrillers will enjoy this book.

About the Author

Marjorie A. Pett, MStat, DSW, is a Research Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, having been on the faculty since 1980. By her own admission, she is a “collector” of academic degrees: BA (Brown University), MS in sociology (University of Stockholm, Sweden), MSW (Smith College), DSW (University of Utah), and MStat (Biostatistics) (University of Utah).

Dr. Pett has a strong commitment to facilitating the practical application of statistics in the social, behavioral, and biological sciences, especially among practitioners in health care settings. She has designed and taught graduate courses to students from a variety of disciplines at the beginning and advanced levels, including research design and data management, parametric and nonparametric statistics, biostatistics, multivariate statistics, instrument development, and factor analysis. She has tried to approach the teaching of statistics with humor and from a clinician’s perspective and has been the recipient of several distinguished teaching awards both at the College and University levels.

Her most recent research interests include the development of client-centered assessment tools and interventions to evaluate and enhance health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for persons with intellectual disabilities. She is the author of numerous research articles and chapters, and is an author of the Sage publication, Making Sense of Factor Analysis: The Use of Factor Analysis for Instrument Development in Health Care Research.

When not engaged in research, writing, or teaching, Marge is a (now retired) state soccer referee, devotee of tennis, an avid (high handicap) golfer, student of Italian and French, reader of mystery novels, grandmother to three, mother to two, and wife to (only) one.�

Great nonparametric statistics textbook ever!!

I had Dr. Pett's two books, Making Sense of Factor Analysis and Nonparametric Statistics for Health Care Research. Those two books are very helpful for my research and data analysis. I am glad to know that "Nonparametric Statistics for Health Care Research" has the 2nd edition. The first thing got my attention is that this new edition is much thicker than the previous edition. After I read it, I love it because it provides the up-to-date information and also includes the step-by-step data analysis using new version of SPSS. I think that this book is good for both new and advanced researchers who plan to apply nonparametric stat in their studies..

Great for people who are not well-versed in nonparametric statistics

This book pulled my bacon out of the fire! Most of my focus has been on parametric statistics when analyzing data. Cue panic mode when I had to use nonparametric techniques (with which I'm not well acquainted) to analyze some wildly skewed data that cannot be transformed.This book has been invaluable to alleviate my fears and to help me choose/interpret/present the most appropriate tests for my particular hypotheses. Thank you, Dr. Pett!

A great blueprint for risk assessment and mitigation

When I began my Project Management Professional certification through George Washington University and Motorola several years ago, one of the first courses I took was one dealing with project risk analysis and response. The text for the class was Risk Management: Concepts and Guidance, by Carl Pritchard, and has served as a blueprint for assessing and mitigating risk in many projects for which I was responsible.
Pritchard's emphasis is not on designing assessments and mitigation strategies for all circumstances, but on building useful information that can be applied toward a particular project situation. This book has a natural alignment with the principles and concepts of , produced by the Project Management Institute's (PMI) Standards Committee. While the PMI identifies four phases of risk management, Pritchard adds a fifth phase upfront, called risk planning.
The book is divided into two major sections: Section 1 addresses risk processes and practices; Section 2 is concerned with specific risk management techniques. The four appendixes contain information on contractor risk management, list of risk sources, basic probability concepts, quantifying expert judgment, and special notes on software risk. The book concludes with a glossary of terms, bibliography, and index.
Of particular value in the book are the 50+ figures and tables that illustrate some of the more complex statistical/probability models used in risk assessment and mitigation. Each chapter follows a template that structures the same type of information. For example, each chapter in Section 2 contains the following subheadings:Technique Description; When Applicable; Input and Output; Major Steps in Applying the Technique; Use of Results; Resource Requirements; Reliability; Selection Criteria; Output; Summary
The 218-page book (softcover)is an easy read and a highly useful desk reference for any project manager concerned about planning for and mitigating risk to projects. My dog-eared, heavily highlighted copy has served me well over the past 3 years.

I used this text as part of a Risk Management course, and I expect to use it in practice. It's an excellent resource for risk managment tools. Especially for quantifying financial risks.

I think this book is quite hexaustive and well structured.
You can use it as check list, and get practical advices on what and how approach risk management. This however cover only half of the Risk Management parctice: the one you can keep under a "statistical" control. The other half, the one that requires your gut and feeling, needs other books to be covered.

Too general for my purposes

The author claims that Aloe Vera is the plant of immortality. There is a long list of all the ailments that Aloe Vera is good for. They include the skin of course but also things like diabetes, arthritis and many more. There really was not a good explanation of why this plant should be considered the plant of immortality.

There is a section on recipes but no actual recipes as to exactly how to use Aloe Vera, just some vague thoughts and ideas.

The book also includes warnings and dangers and how to grow the plant.

While this book is somewhat interesting, I was quite disappointed in the recipe section. Creating a mixture of aloe and oatmeal with some olive oil doesn't really work for me. I don't call that a recipe.
