'Drawing on a vast range of scholarly literature, this book is a timely and cautionary account of how, in the recent past, homosexuality came to be seen as a psychiatric illness. The book explores with sensitivity and even-handedness the measures taken to 'treat' it. Despite lack of both understanding and knowledge, doctors and nurses enthusiastically deployed untested theories to rid homosexuals of their 'symptoms' and to alter their identity and sexual orientation. While some mental health personnel were genuinely attempting to relieve people from what they saw as the misery of their lives, others doubtless saw the management of homosexuality as an opportunity to promote psychiatry and advance their careers. The book is structured around two dominant themes, firstly that health services frequently come under political pressure to deliver more than they are capable of, and secondly that mental health personnel have frequently overstated their capabilities. Science, evidence and policy are necessary foundations upon which to build health services, but all of these must beware that they are not biased by prevailing mores if they are to be confident of doing no harm. What is deemed unacceptable behaviour may well be dependent on the social context in which it is displayed. This challenging and engaging book will inform and, on occasion, astonish those with an interest in mental health problems and service delivery. Tommy Dickinson has presented a salutary warning to maturing professions that they should learn from and analyse the influences that shaped the intentions and interventions of their predecessors. 'A powerful and well-researched book that stimulates thought.’

Don't miss it! - what a gifted historian. It explores with sensitivity and even-handedness how queer men, in the not too distant past came under the gaze of psychiatry. While we can look back on these barbaric “gay cures” in shock; Dickinson’s ability to write this history with incisive perception reveals how the nurses who administered these treatments were ordinary nurses who were compelled to act as they did by some influential factors. But also, fascinatingly, why a small number engaged in some captivating subversive behaviours to avoid administering them. The book presents an important area of nurse ethics and socialisation by analysing how nurses make decisions about what is professionally right and wrong in a context of ambiguity, frustration and conflict. I enjoyed it so much - does anybody know if he has written anything else? I saw him being interviewed on BBC morning TV recently, but there was no mention of any other works.

Phenomenal book with a story that must be told

This book is not only interesting and well-written, it is scholarly but without being stuffy or pedantic. Tommy Dickinson is a rising nurse historian. He not only captures the essence of what it was like to be a patient and a nurse during the age of oppression and suppression of homosexuality, he describes through the voices of his interviewees the injustice to humanity and the way that they have mastered their identities. I enjoyed every chapter and the appendix. Kudos to Professor Dickinson for his courage and interest in the voices of this sector of society. It was touching to read the appendix and to learn that many of the interviewees died shortly after their interviews. Thank you for telling their stories!

Bring It Alive

Tommy is an exceptionally brave doctor who has brought to light what so many other books have failed to do. I agree whole heartedly with the previous reviews and have been in touch with him over the last couple of months. As a gay journalist myself I'm doing my very best to work with Manchester University Press to bring the book alive on screen.

About the Author
With their unique blend of tasty recipes, cheeky humour and irresistible enthusiasm, the Hairy Bikers have become Britain's favourite food heroes. Born and bred in Barrow-in-Furness, Dave Myers' versatile skills have taken him to some unusual places. He worked in a steelworks as a student, to finance his studies in Fine Arts, and later joined the BBC as a make-up artist, specialising in prosthetics. Si King hails from North East England and is a big, blond bearded biker with an infectious laugh. He worked for many years as an Assistant Director and Locations Manager for film and television, including the Harry Potter films. Si and Dave met on the set of a TV drama in 1995 and have been cooking and riding together ever since. They have now written over 20 cookbooks, including Chicken & Egg, Mums Know Best, Bakeation, Meat Feasts and 12 Days of Christmas. The first weight loss guide I feel I can respect

This is the first time I have taken the trouble to review a book. But I really have to talk about this one, as this is a weight-loss guide that I finally feel I could follow. I have found that all the books I have ever read on losing weight (so, so many over so many years!)and the weight-loss clubs I have joined (tried them all) have been insufferably pious and patronising in tone and the recipes have been less than appetising, to put it mildly. They just make me want to rebel against the kind of 'religion' they are preaching, instead of inspiring me to lose weight. But Dave and Si I can respect! The book is well-written, doesn't patronise and the whole approach is sensible, honest and down-to-earth. The recipes themselves are fabulous. Every one is delicious and you don't have to be some kind of expert cook to follow them. In fact, you don't have to be on a diet to try these recipes. They are so good and easy to follow that they are good enough to use even if you're having people over for dinner. Don't be put off by what might sometimes look like a very long list of ingredients, as you'll find most of them are herbs, spices etc.

This food just doesn't feel or taste like the traditional, punitive 'diet' fare. Like most people, I have a very busy lifestyle and I am a competent rather than a good cook, but I do like to cook from scratch, especially at weekends, and freeze portions to be heated up when I get home from work. There are loads of recipes that lend themselves to this, plus many others that can be prepared very quickly, even if you don't get home until quite late in the evening. My tip (apologies to chefs who may baulk at this, but it's something I've done for ages) is to finely dice a big batch of chillis and freeze them in a plastic container, as it is a fiddly job which I know from my own experience can sometimes put you off attempting a recipe, either because you don't have them to hand or you just can't be bothered preparing them - and quite a few of the recipes in this book call for them. They don't have to be defrosted as they will defrost in seconds once they hit the heat, but in any case they defrost in minutes if they're scraped out of the container with a fork onto a plate.

Dave and Si - you probably won't get to read my humble review, but I have to say that I buy and read dozens of books of all kinds every year, and this is definitely one of my best buys of 2012. I am really enjoying trying out the recipes. All I can say is - HURRY UP AND WRITE ANOTHER!!!!!

Well worth it!!!

I watched the Hairy Dieters series and really enjoyed it. I had high hopes for the book from what I saw on the tv and I was not disappointed. Having seen the show, I wanted to try some of the recipes as my husband and I have embarked on a bit of a lose weight and get fit regime for the new year. The book is interesting and the recipes easy to follow, not to mention delicious, with great photographs - something important to my husband when he cooks from a book. I have made a couple of the recipes so far and they don't disappoint - I can especially recommend the cupcakes - I had rave reviews when I took them to a recent lunch with friends! My mother in law was also interested enough to read my copy and has since brought her own. Even though I am in Australia, the recipes are easy to follow and ingredients easy to source. Thanks Hairy Dieters for the inspiration! I am looking forward to trying more of the recipes over the coming weeks and enjoying good, tasty food.

A ++ Delicious and FUN!

This book is amazing, and I love these guys. They have many delicious and hearty recipes that have been calculated with a dietician for caloric and nutritional content. My family loves the food and I have fun cooking with their books. As I watch the show, I can hear them speaking - and it's in that fun, exuberant spirit with which this book is written.
Highly recommended!

Author Dean (Broken Government, Conservatives Without Conscience) and Goldwater Jr., the Senator's son and an eighth-term California congressman, explore the complicated figure in this "scrap book" of journal excerpts, correspondence, articles and other primary testimony. A Republican maverick who valued principle over political expediency, Goldwater can be predictable-maintaining loyalty toward Nixon even as the President edged him out of inner White House circles (as late as May 1973, Goldwater called for Jack Anderson's Pulitzer to be re-dubbed "the Benedict Arnold Award")-but he was neither an ideologue nor a mud-slinger: for instance, his hard-hitting fight against President Johnson stopped short of scandalizing LBJ's chief of staff, arrested for "disorderly" conduct in a men's toilet, and in 1994 he went against the powerful new GOP congress by saying publicly of Whitewater, "I haven't heard anything yet that says this is all that big of a deal." Why did you write the book now?
My father's journals are rich with personal observations and feelings that have never been seen before. I am sure my father would not mind them being published for he enjoyed stirring the water of public opinion.

What is the story behind your collaboration with John Dean on this book?
John was doing research for another article at the AZ Historical Foundation located at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona when we stumbled upon several boxes containing my father's journals. These papers were presumed lost. We both came to the same idea that the public should see these and thus started the collaboration.

Will the personal writings in this book change public opinion of who Barry Goldwater, Sr. was?
Yes, they will see a kinder and gentler man who really cared about his country, his family, his party, and the average human being's welfare.

Do you think there is a message that this book has to offer today's presidential hopefuls?
Yes, get politics out of the gutter. Politics and government needs to be restored to a higher level of honesty and dedicated service. Start getting along and stop all the bitter partisan fighting.

Has the Republican Party changed since your father's time in office? If so how?
Conservative Republicans have been taken over by the religious right, the so-called social conservatives. My father had a deep faith in God but he never felt a need to put a bumper sticker on his car or dictate to anyone else how or what to believe. The demand of some to vote for a candidate strictly on the basis of religious views deeply troubled him, as such dictates violated freedom of choice and personal privacy, the antithesis of the original philosophy of the Conservative movement, of which he was a founder.

Why is Goldwater conservatism still relevant today?
Because it is all about maximizing individual freedom. This country is the only country founded on freedom but today we are slowly losing these to a growing government.

Pure enjoyment

For those of us of a certain age, Barry Goldwater was the prickly candidate for president in 1964, whose "extremism in defense of liberty" speech turned away millions of voters. But Goldwater stayed around long after that and it's a good thing he did. "Pure Goldwater", a neatly arranged compilation of his journal entries (along with some letters and speeches) reveals a much more complex and attractive man than the public got to know more than a generation ago.

The title of the book could not have been more appropriate. Here we see Senator Goldwater in all of his frankness, lambasting presidents with whom he worked, yet revelling in the love of his family, photography, flying and service to his country. In reading "Pure Goldwater" it's not hard to be in agreement with him on one page and subsequently want to wring his neck on the next. He seemed always to be on the cutting edge of the day's events, even when he was doing some of the "cutting", himself. It's fascinating to see him comment on every president from FDR to Clinton and there was much about most of them he didn't like.

Much of the book centers around his relationship with Richard Nixon and the trials and tribulations of Watergate and perhaps the most intriguing part of the book follows his recollections on summing up Nixon's chances in the Senate for impeachment survival. I remember that day well and how it changed my mind about Senator Goldwater. Here was a true statesman rising to the occasion in a most difficult time in our nation's history.

Barry Goldwater's seeming drift to the left regarding such issues as women's choice and gay rights no doubt sent shivers up and down the collective spines of his conservative colleagues. But Goldwater reasoned well and was always practical and this will be a big part of his legacy...a conservative man ahead of his time. "Pure Goldwater" is a pure joy to read and I commend John Dean and Barry Goldwater, Jr. for allowing us this terrific look at the senator...as told through his own words. I highly recommend it.

Anything John Dean writes is good, often very good...one of the best writers and I have come to think of him of at least brilliant. Why, oh why cannot we have a leader as this man?...Except for LBJ's Civil Rights bills and his sdomestic and health policies, I know of no president that was great 'til you go back to John Q Adams...Jefferson before that.
Read anything by Mr Dean...you will not be disappointed, no matter who you are.

Ignorant Bible-thumper is boring

The author uses no facts nor figures to back up any criticism The New Atheism has to say. Page after page is nothing more than right-wing hate-filled propaganda against people that use science and reason to govern their lives. His arguments go something like this: "An invisible man is much more believeable than science, so stop questioning it!" For ignorant people that believe in mythology Marshall will make you thump your Bible, for the rest of us, just use reason.

David Marshall's analysis of New Atheist arguments

"The Truth Behind the New Atheism" is David Marshall's introduction to the radical Ontological Naturalist worldview
of the New Atheists.

Prominent among the New Atheist authors are Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Daniel Dennett.
These are those whom Richard Dawkins identifies as "The Four Horsemen" of New Atheism.

Other popular authors who endorse the radical worldview of New Atheism are Richard Carrier, Victor Stenger, and John W. Loftus.

Some of the strange advocacies in the bestselling New Atheist literature
are such strange ideas as the following:

(a) The entire universe was created as a "computer simulation" by a "vastly superior civilization" prior to the Big Bang.
(That is the argument presented by Richard Dawkins on the last two pages of chapter two of "The God Delusion".)
(b) "Religion poisons everything." ( published by Christopher Hitchens, absent supporting toxicological data)
(c) The claim that citizens in the United States can "kill people" that they cannot "talk to". (published by Sam Harris in "The End of Faith"
(d) Claims that God does not exist. (published by Daniel Dennett, whose arguments, by the author's indication, are not themselves, based upon logic.
(e) Claims by Richard Carrier, that "good" exists, absent scientific evidence which supports the conclusion.

And so on and so forth.

David Marshall's own analysis and exposition on the New Atheist phenomenon is a very worthwhile read.

and yet, oddly enough, no hate campaign was ever directed against these scholars,
all of whom have been sharply critical of the New Atheist worldview for its philosopnical shortcomings
or its scientific shortcomings.
