Jagdish N. Sheth is the Charles H. Kellstadt Professor of Marketing in the Goizueta Business School and the founder of the Center for Relationship Marketing (CRM) at Emory University. Prior to his present position, he was the Robert E. Brooker Professor of Marketing at the University of Southern California and the founder of the Center for Telecommunications Management; the Walter H. Stellner Distinguished Professor of Marketing at the University of Illinois, and on the faculty of Columbia University, as well as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Sheth is nationally and internationally known for his scholarly contributions in Consumer Behavior, Marketing, Global Competition, and Strategic Thinking. Jag has published more than 200 books and research papers in different areas of marketing. His book The Theory of Buyer Behavior (1969) with John A. Howard is a classic in the field. He is also a co-author of Marketing Theory: Evolution and Evaluation (1988), Consumption Values and Market Choices (1991), Clients for Life (2000), ValueSpace: Winning the Battle for Market Leadership (2001), and The Rule of Three (2002). Professor Sheth has worked for numerous industries and companies in the United States, Europe, and Asia, both as an Advisor and as a Seminar Leader. Macro Marketing Trends in Emerging Markets

I am really interested in starting a business of my own so thought this book will give me trends to look for. Dr. Jag Sheth is known to be a visionary who has researched trends all his life. I found this book very well researched with how India and China will make a big difference in time to come and the triad of trade between US, India and China. The authors talk a lot about Pan-Asian currency and free trade in Sino-Asia, all makes sense. My best take-away was the rise of Africa with China investing a lot there. I did not know so manythings which I learnt and gave me a good idea about markets to look out for and may be follow to start my venture. Overall a decent book, though a quick read and doesnt goto Micro level. So if you are seeking very hardcore analysis, stay away from this book though this does a great job of macro perspectives of markets.

About the Author
John Rowan is the author of a number of books, including The Reality Game: A guide to humanistic counselling and therapy (2nd edition) (Routledge 1998), Ordinary Ecstasy: The dialectics of humanistic psychology (3rd edition) (Routledge 2001), Subpersonalities (Routledge 1990), The Transpersonal in psychotherapy and counselling (Routledge 1993), and Healing the Male Psyche: Therapy as Initiation (Routledge 1997). He has co-edited The plural self. Multiplicity in everyday life with Mick Cooper (Sage 1999). There are chapters by him in many other books on psychotherapy. He is on the Editorial Board of Self & Society, the Journal of Humanistic Psychology, the Transpersonal Psychology Review and the Counselling Psychology Review. He is a founder member of the Association of Humanistic Psychology Practitioners. He is a past member of the Governing Board of the UK Council for Psychotherapy, representing the Humanistic and Integrative Section. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. He teaches, supervises and leads groups at the Minster Centre, where he is also the Middlesex University Link Tutor. His workshop interests are creativity, research, subpersonalities and the transpersonal. He has had six books of poetry published. He and his wife live in North Chingford, London: he has four children and four grandchildren from a previous marriage.

Michael Jacobs was for many years Director of the Counselling and Psychotherapy programme at the University of Leicester, having before that worked as a counsellor and psychotherapist in the same university. He is now in independent practice and living in Swanage, Dorset, where he supervises counsellors, sees clients and continues to write and edit. His books on psychodynamic counselling and therapy are used as key texts on many training courses - notably The Presenting Past (1998 - 2nd edition - Open University Press), Psychodynamic Counselling in Action (1999, 2nd edition, Sage) and Still Small Voice (2nd edition 1993, SPCK). He has also written on Freud and Winnicott, which books have been translated into Chinese. He is a Fellow of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, a psychodynamic psychotherapist registered with UKCP, and an honorary life member of the Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling. His semi-retired status gives him time for walking in the nearby Purbeck Hills, listening to music, reading biographies and involvement in the local community. He is married, and has three children and two grandchildren from a previous marriage.

Authoritative, clear, readable, and useful

I am a therapist, and have studied Rowan's topic for a decade. He has done an enormous service for lay and clinical people interested in a core phenomenon that affects us all - personality splitting. His book is a credible, well organized, well researched, relatively unbiased survey of what a wide range of mental health researchers have written about splitting in the last 150 years - including Freud, Jung, Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir, and many others. He concludes that - rather than having a single monolithic personality, most (all ?) of us have many "subpersonalities" that activate or slumber, depending on inner and outer circumstances. This confirms my own clinical and personal experience. The idea helps explain why we can "love" someone" and "hate" them at the same time - and diet in the morning, and binge in the evening.

The last chapter artfully weaves ideas of several major researchers to postulate an idea of human development that includes the path we each travel toward meaningful spirituality and our "transpersonal," or Higher Self. Rowan's synthesis of earlier theories is the most lucid and credible I've read in over 35 years' research.

Rowan is a well read social scientist, psychologist, and an experienced therapist. Anyone seriously interested in understanding theselves - and others - can profit by reading this intriguing book. Another, probably easier to find, is "Internal Family Systems Therapy," by Dr. Richard Schwartz.

Based on 19 years' experience, my own book on Rowan's subject focuses on a practical framework for "meeting" and harmonizing normal personality subselves under the expert guidance of the resident true Self:

Academic subpersonality

Subpersonalities: The People Inside Us
As a management sciences and OR academic, I have been wondering about the ultimate driving forces of decision making in public and private productive organizations. This search led me to study the mind processes. Amongst personality research branches like Jung/MBTI MBTI Manual (A guide to the development and use of the Myers Briggs type indicator) (3rd ed #6111), eneagram Understanding the Enneagram: The Practical Guide to Personality Typesand Big 5 The Big Five Personality Factors, I found this innovative and enlightening book about our inner division. When living in UK last year I was told by John Rowan that there is a new trend to call this subject as "Dialogical Self". Well, I don't agree, because subpersonality reflects the phenomenon in all the extension: it is about our inner autonomous entities, which can take decisions by themselves, without even our knowledge. Despite admiring Herman's book The Dialogical Self in Psychotherapy , I stay with Rowan's subpersonalities. Recently Rita Carter published her Multiplicity Multiplicity: The New Science of Personality, Identity, and the Self, which testifies and spreads the good news. We become one as long as we are aware of our multiplicity. Is there a connection with management sciences? Yes indeed, since we change personalities in order to pretend to keep the apparent coherence. And doing so, we blindly criticize behaviors that correspond to our own conducts. Unconsciously we are afraid of being nothing behind our personalities, what we could only find out if we look at them from inside. What a huge effect over the economic behavior and productive cooperation it could have!
This, in short, was the kind of thought that the book arises in the practical reader.
With plenty of examples of subpersonality in everyday life, different kinds and origins of subpersonalities, Rowan's book is really insightful and extensively referenced.

A clear Introduction

This is a very good introduction to the area of subpersonalities including the major contributors, history of the theory beginning with Freud's id, ego, superego, finding your own subs and learning how to work with them toward intergration, or what Jung called Wholeness.
Once you see how close other theories are to this, you find ourself asking, why didi't anyone teach me this before--it maks so much sence! Synonyms for subpersonalities include: complexes, archytypes,dream figures, imagoes, disempowered selves, shadows, sub-personalities, ego states, mood states and more.

Very awesome cover, layered paper folded over itself. Great coffee table book. There's about 20 amazing pages and the rest are just ok... This is probably the last design book I buy. Dribbble for now on.

"On Story: Screenwriters and their Craft", edited by Barbara Morgan and Maya Perez is a project of the Austin Film Festival. As Morgan states in her introduction, "This book is about the moment a film is born and how it evolves, told from the perspective of its originator - the story teller." The text is excerpts from conversations well-known screenwriters have had over the years as part of the Austin Film Festival. Topics include Inspiration, Story, Process, Structure, Character and Dialogue, Rewriting, and Collaboration. Excerpts from actual classic screenplays are also included which adds to the instructive quality of this book. There is nothing like being able to read the masters at work! This book is highly useful for anyone interested in screenwriting.

Manifesting Your Spirit, the second step in the Way of the Warrior Series, continues to proclaim the eternal perspective of the kingdom of Christ. Cooke excels in the prophetic expression of what I think is the Holy Spirit's inspiration to believers. This book appeals to readers to step up boldly in faith to the battle to which we are called; it also calls us into intimacy with Jesus, our king and victor. Cooke offers a revelatory guide to the paradoxical way of life in God's kingdom on earth...we may suffer, but we are victorious -- our enemy has been defeated by our ever-present Conqueror.

As a Warrior in God's kingdom, it may seem ironic that, as Cooke writes, "intimacy must be the highest priority of life in the Spirit." We are warriors called into intimacy with our hero. Cooke's book facilitates overcoming through intimacy.

Cooke writes the following to emphasize the point: "We are not designed to have merely functional relationships in the Kingdom. God is highly relational, and so intimacy must be the highest priority of life in the Spirit...The biggest battle in the church at this time is the battle for intimacy with God."

His goal here is to teach people to live into such intimacy with God that their lives will display his glorious splendor and reveal God's victory in Jesus Christ.

Life-changing!

Although I just started "Manifesting Your Spirit", I'm as captivated with it as I was with "Qualities Of A Spiritual Warrior". I'm learning how to dig deeper so that God can cleanse me deeper. One has to have a hunger and thirst that will not be satisfied with anything less than all of God, and a drive to press in. I love to soak in the Presence of the Lord. He changes me and speaks to me. Nothing else in life matters but Him, in those times. I believe it's possible to live every day in that complete peace of His presence.

I am a more godly example to a hurting world when I am in a state of God's peace and joy, unmoved by circumstances. THAT is what will draw people to us, to the light of Christ in us. We have to be different in order to be attractive to the world. We have to possess something they desperately want for themselves.

Corrie and Betsie Ten Boom possessed warrior qualities, though in a concentration camp, as described in "The Hiding Place". The Lord has revealed things to Graham Cooke that he revealed to Corrie and Betsie; things worthy of searching out for ones self.

About the Author

While attending Harvard University, Anton Myrer (1922-1996) enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps immediately after the Pearl Harbor attacks. He served for three years during World War II until he was wounded in the Pacific. He is also the author of the novels The Big War, The Last Convertible, and A Green Desire.

Anton Myrer, a former U.S. Marine, has written the all-time greatest novel of a soldier's life of service. The protagonist, Sam Damon, was commissioned on the battlefield but never forgot his simple and honorable roots as a citizen and enlisted man. He lived a life of dedicated service, loyal to his subordinates, leaders, the Army, and the nation, and rose to two-star General officer rank. His nemesis was a West Point graduate, Courtney Massengale, who was never a soldier at heart, but merely a careerist... out for himself. On one level, these two characters provide contrasting types of military officers, one noble and self-sacrificing, and and the other obsessed with personal aggrandizement. On a more intimate level, these two characters represent the struggle within every soldier's heart between the allure of promotion and prestige, and the call to duty and humble loyalty to his men and profession. Myrer died of cancer on Robert E. Lee's birthday in January 1996. I read the book before I was commissioned at West Point in 1976 and the story stuck with me throughout my own humble 20+ year career as a constant conscience and counselor against self-promotion. A book well worth reading

I first read this book as a high school student in the late 1960s. Vietnam was reaching it's peak and the Armed Forces was never out of the headlines. Since that time, I've taken it dwon from the shelf and re-read it. I have found it of value in my military career as a reference on leadership and personalities. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest or need to know about positive and negative leadership traits. The lead charecter starts his military career in the desert and scrub of Mexico searching for Pancho Villa. Sam Damon is not in the branches that might have a little dash or adventure such as the cavalry or air service. He is a ground pounder in the infantry as a private who's biggest concern is learning water discipline. He moves on through ranks and gains a commission during World War I and manages to retain it following the war. The inter-war years and Damon's adjustment to both married life and military life on officers row is insightful. World War II is Damon's moment to shine; he does but not without personal costs both within his immediate family and his service family. His end is both moving and I felt, almost inevitable. This book is not a quick read, nor is it one that is good for only one time. It's value is from rereading it and learning something new each time. I highly recommend this book. My only criticism is that it is rather high priced; I wish the publisher could get it down to where more people would be able to purchase the hard bound edition and not the paperback.

Anton Myrer's "Once an Eagle" a must-read for leaders

You've had Total Quality Management. You've read Sun Tzu and Musashi on business as war. You've been to Outward Bound and you've undergone Team Building exercises until you're blue in the face. Now read the novel that has more to say about the qualities a real leader should have than any text written by a management guru--Anton Myrer's classic "Once an Eagle."
The book is a youth-to-death story of "Sad" Sam Damon, a midwestern boy who steeps himself in military history and a code of honor that requires him to step forward and take the lead in almost every situation. Myrer has tapped into a simple truth. That's what real leaders do; they lead.
While Sam Damon is a military hero, he's no marble monument. Myrer shows us that real world leaders are assailed with doubts, real fears, and insecurities that can lead them to cave in to expediency under extreme pressure. But in Sam Damon, Myrer shows us that true leadership can consist of recognizing your mistakes, swallowing hard, and stepping up to the plate again to do the right thing.
Such a strong protagonist clearly needs a strong opponent. Myrer delivers with Courtney Massengale, a supremely brilliant and ruthless adversary whose weakness, as Sam Damon realizes, is that he does not love any man. It is the byplay between these two characters that Myrer uses to telling effect in illustrating how love is a key element in leadership. I know of half a dozen executives who have patterned their management styles on Sam Damon's lessons. They are the best bosses I ever had. This is a book that should be required reading in our service academies, and as part of every MBA program and civil service exam in the country. Fortunately, it's also a wonderful read.
