About the Author
Django Wexler (djangowexler.com) is a self-proclaimed computer/fantasy/sci fi geek. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with degrees in creative writing and computer science, and worked in artificial intelligence research. He left his job at Microsoft and now writes full-time for Penguin. Django's first book, an epic fantasy novel for adults, was published by Roc.

A fun, action packed fantasy for kdis

I was looking forward to reading this and had it on my TBR shelf for quite awhile when I was lucky enough to win a copy here on Goodreads (yay!).
This is a fun adventure, perfect for middle grade readers. There's surprises at every turn, a world full of fantasy, and characters which are realistic enough, they could be real friends. I really enjoy the mixture of dark and light, humor and tension and especially Alice's great attitude to do what she has to do. . .but without loosing compassion and readiness to be there for others.
There's never a dull moment in this story, keeping me glued to the pages until the very end. And here was where my only critique comes in--I would have like to see this last just a little bit longer. There were a few things which didn't feel completely wrapped up to me, but that's why this is a series, I suppose. And I'll definitely be looking forward to book 3 to see what happens next.

Fun, compelling read for any age

This book felt like 4.5 stars to me -- more than just "like" but not quite "love" -- but since I can only award whole stars, I'm rounding up.
Admittedly, I'm not in the age group this book was written for (I'm an adult), but I enjoyed it thoroughly. I had read the first book and had mixed feelings about it -- while it was inventive, I felt distant from the main character, Alice, and I need to develop an emotional connection to the characters to really be satisfied with a book. The Mad Apprentice solved that issue for me; I felt a much stronger connection to Alice this time around, probably because she's closely interacting with her peers for the majority of the story. The plot itself was also compelling and was very focused, keeping me turning the pages to see what was going to happen.
The book does advance the larger plot arc that began in book one, revealing more information about the Readers and about the disappearance of Alice's father. We also learn more about Ending and the Dragon, and I liked these new details. Wexler has created a richly textured world and this book continues to widen and improve it.
My one complaint was that I really wanted the book to continue a bit longer. I was very curious about how much of Alice's adventure she shares with her master, Geryon, and with Ending and Ashes. Hopefully that will be addressed in the next book, which I'm eager to read.
In short, this is an entertaining, satisfying book, and I definitely recommend it.

This is the second book in the Forbidden Library series
This book is much stranger than the first book. The library apprentice is driven mad and becomes the bad guy of book. Alice and her friends are forced to fight the monsters from every book in order to stop an evil plot. I didn’t like that the author chose to make the apprentice the brother of Alice’s friend. This makes the story have a sad, uneasy undertone. Other characters in the book are killed while fighting multiple enemies which also makes this book the down arc of the series story line. I did like the theme of friendship and learning to work together as a team, which makes the losses even harder. The book starts starts off slow but speeds up through the middle and then slows to the end which happens abruptly leaving you ready for the third book. If you read this book you have to read the third book so that you are not left with a sad, ugh, feeling. It will be worth it in the end.
