Wow, this thing is berift of actual content, but has plenty of whitespace!

Wow, so... we picked up this book as an additional reference at work for MongoDB, and boy, were we surprised at the lack of content. Pages literally completely empty except a single line of text (roughly) center-justified. Blank pages. Pages that appeared to be screenshots of Microsoft Word (???) Pages of code dumps, triple-spaced, with two-inch margins (about 10-12 lines per page). This looks like someone had to rush to hit some sort of page limit and just dumped content, increased the margin size ridiculously, and increased the font size. There is barely enough actual content in this book to fill a moderate 10-12 page pamphlet.

The reviews tricked me, I should have actually read them... one actually describes this DB as a "Java Programming Language" (it isn't a programming language!). I could have figured out that the ratings were fake.

Amazingly little content, tons and tons of whitespace. The pictures included are from the actual book. Huge fonts, double, triple, even quadruple spacing are all used to mask the utter lack of content. Complete waste of money. Calling this a book is an insult to those annoying pamphlets people leave at your door.

Good background into the mind and method of John Connolly

I am a big fan of the author's Charlie Parker series, and had read the previous Nocturnes volume. I very much enjoyed reading the chapters about the beginning of his career, and even went back and re-read (again) his first novel - "Every Dead Thing" - after I discovered it WAS his first novel

Simply the Best

What can I say? I love his work. He is in a class of writing all his own and he is very, very good. He writes like a highbrow version of Stephen King. There's horror, but you have to think about it.

A Collection of Tales From A True Master!

Night Music: Nocturnes Volume Two is an unbelievably wonderful collection of tales from a master.

The only other short form John Connolly story I've read is The Wanderer in Unknown Realms, which I loved. Turns out that's part of a larger narrative: The Fractured Atlas-Five Fragments. This is a group of 5 tales of varying lengths involving an ancient, evil text. Who doesn't love a good story about an evil book? And here, there's 5, (count them, 5!),and they are simply delicious.

Two of the other stories here are connected: The Caxton Private Lending Library and Book Depository and Holmes on the Range: A Tale of the Caxton Private Library and Book Depository. These are killer pieces about characters in books coming to life and in what type of places they reside. I want to go there for a nice long visit.

One of the reasons this collection is so perfect for me is all these stories about books. And book lovers. And book characters. And evil books. I can't resist!

Plus, Connolly's characterization and writing are beyond compare. I loved this passage from the story The Wander in Unknown Realms :

"There was a benignity to him that I liked, a happy disengagement from the futilities and ugliness of life's toil that one encountered in those who had discovered a way to take something for which they had only love and gratitude, and make it their means of support."

Ain't that the truth?

This was a lovely, dark collection. It ends with a sort of autobiographical essay called I Live Here ,which was enjoyable and included insights into John Connolly's boyhood experiences with horror fiction and movies.

I found every story in this volume worthy of my attention and I can't say enough good things about it. My highest recommendation!
