Can they stay on task long enough to successfully fight the Sons of Domnall? Or will their complicated feelings for one another throw a spanner in the works before it’s all said and done?

This paranormal romance novella is the second in the Scottish Werebear series. Although each part stands on its own and can be read out of order, you'll get more enjoyment out of them if you read them one after the other.

Intriguing with a unique shifter twist.

Aidan McMillan is a bear shifter, from Rannock, living and working in Edinburgh with the Alliance. The Alliance is made up of shifters for the purpose of putting an end to the secret society known as the Sons of Domnall. This group is made up of humans whose sole purpose is to rid the world of the shifter population.

Aidan has left his family’s farm in the hands of his brother, Derek, and is determined to find and stop the Sons of Domnall from their mission, but he also has another agenda. Finding the person or person(s) who, he believes, murdered his parents.

Heidi Blackwood is a werewolf, and the daughter of her packs Alpha. Her father has sent her to Edinburgh to take part in the Alliance and their mission to eliminate the Sons of Domnall. She is stunned when Aidan greets her at the front door of the Alliance and she realizes that he is her mate. She recognizes that there is something different about him, but cannot put her finger on what that difference might be.

Heidi proves to be a valuable asset to the Alliance and eventually works her way into a meeting with the Sons of Domnall and the story takes off from there. Can Aidan find the hideout of the Sons, can he and Heidi truly be mates? These are just a couple of the mysteries to be solved in this novella.

Again, this is a novella, so a very quick, but thoroughly enjoyable listen/read with plenty of action, emotion, and heat to keep the listener/reader interested. The characters are strong and fully fleshed out, drawing you into their world and lives. I’m looking forward to the next story in the series.

Can Stand Alone, But Better to Read Order. Semi-Serial Format.

Judging a Book by it's Cover:
Staying with the same great colors from book 1, an equally adorable bear sits in the background while the male model is in front with a bare torso and tattoos.
Looking Deeper:
Third person POV. Novella > under 100 pages. Can stand alone, but it would be better to read in order.
It's been 15 years since his parents died and Aiden is still searching for the answers that tie their death to the Sons of Domnall, now as a member of the Alliance. The Rannock Alpha has sent Heidi, his own daughter, to be the wolf representative for the Alliance, to watch and insure balance for all shifter species. Neither Aiden nor Heidi ever expected to find their mate in their Alliance partner. Both lead characters are strong and mostly smart. The secondary characters include Derek and Clarice (book 1) as well as a few new ones. The chemistry is instantaneous, although they both try to avoid it at first. Dialogue is very good, so it character interaction. The plot felt more like a serial episode that a complete story. There are many loose ends and open possibilities in every direction. Flow is very smooth and easy to read. The conflict is not easy to ignore, but somehow it is avoided as a non-issue. HEA is implied, but never seen through yet. Already, ADB is leading the reader into AFL. This one just did not feel as complete as AUA, and the serial aspect to the ending is much more pronounced in this one, leading to some disappointment. I'd recommend this series to those love smart and well thought out shifters, BUT I'd suggest you wait until the series is released in it's entirety to read as one full-length novel instead of several micro-novellas.

Aidan McMillan is bear shifter that lost his parents to a tragic accident fifteen years ago. Aidan's goal is to take down The Sons of Domnall at any price for The Alliance. Heidi Blackwood, is a wolf shifter, who is going to work for The Alliance as part of the truce established between wolf and bear. Heidi's reaction to Aidan surprises and disturbs her because she's never felt anything like this before. Heidi gets invited to a meeting with suspected Sons of Domnall members. Aidan stumbles upon two familiar looking men which leads to a trip to Isle of Skye. Aidan is confronted with an unexpected surprise. Can Aidan find what he's looking for? Will Heidi be successful? Will either Aidan or Heidi admit their feelings for one another? Your answers await you in A Dangerous Business.

This follow up to An Unexpected Affair is just as action packed and intriguing. The characters and story are flawed, compelling, real, honest, raw, and unusual too. The author definitely has found her voice within this series. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Great reference for the HR Generalist

As a Human Resource Generalist one is responsible for a vast amount of knowledge. As I researched which general reference book to add to my library, I consulted the "HRCI's PHR and SPHR Certification Guide" for which books and authors most frequently appeared in the notes. I found this book/authors the most. This is the most recent editoin and covers an extensive amount of information. A good feature is the frequent recommendations for places on the internet where one can investigate the topics further. Great book teaching the basics and more of HR

This book is amazing. It makes learning the basic of human resources so easy and interesting. Before I read this book, I was unaware of how many aspects of HR there was. It really helps anyone learn the basics. The text brings up real-world examples and scenarios that really make it fun to read.

If you are an instructor, please do your students a favor and choose this book. The price is really high for such a small book but it really is worth it due to how well it explains the material. Oh yeah, I have no affiliation with the publisher and am basing this review on the twelfth edition.

“The Outer Darkness” is the author's magnum opus that ties together his arguments for unconditional security and conditional rewards. Generally, Arminian and Calvinistic interpreters are agreed that security is conditioned upon perseverance. For the Arminian, you must persevere in order to be elected to go to heaven. If you fail to persevere, you will lose your salvation. This Arminian perspective might be called the forfeitist position. The typical acronym employed for this perspective is PEARS. For the Calvinists, if you are elected, you must persevere in order to go to heaven. If you fail to persevere, this will prove that you were never elected. This perspective could be termed the proveitist position. The way you live reputedly proves whether you are saved. Ultimately, your final salvation is conditioned upon your proving you are saved by the way you live. You must persevere till the end to be saved in the end. The well-known acronym for this perspective is TULIP. The mediating position offered by Cauley, in which unconditional security is defended, has its roots in a historical movement known as the Marrow Controversy. Accordingly, the name chosen by Cauley to represent his approach is Marrowism, which is used for a contemporary expression of the Free Grace Movement. Within the Marrowistic hermeneutic, perseverance is regarded as a means necessary for rewards within heaven rather than for entrance into heaven. The acronym for this perspective is GRAPE. Misthos is the Greek word for “rewards” from which the term misthological is derived. Therefore, from the Marrowistic perspective, perseverance would be considered a misthological issue. The outer darkness is likewise regarded as a misthological (that is, rewards) issue within Cauley’s treatment. Objections to unconditional security in general and to a misthological interpretation of the outer darkness in particular are dealt with in-depth in this two volume work. Marty Cauley earned his B.S. from Western Carolina University and his M.Div. from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (where he was also a co-recipient of the Advanced Greek Award). He is the son of a retired Southern Baptist pastor who also graduated from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Marty has served as the pastor of Southern Baptist churches himself and is currently employed in the computer industry. He and his wife, Dianne, reside in Sylva, North Carolina. They have two sons, Jeremy and Jonathan (with whom he loves to share his passion for biblical research and memorization). He fondly recalls having memorized the Pastoral Epistles with his sons when they were younger. His sons quoted these epistles in their entirety in the AWANA program at the churches they were then attending. Marty has performed dramatic recitations of the Gospel of Mark (among other passages of Scripture).

A Complete Course of Soteriology, Rewards, and Future Things

Volumes 1 and 2 explain in exhaustive detail the critical distinction between: 1) OBTAINING eternal life as a free gift (not reward) from God on the sole condition of faith alone in the Messiah (Jesus) and 2) the promised eternal REWARDS or RECOMPENSE at the Judgment Seat of Christ which results from the believer's deeds in this life. Cauley clearly distinguishes: 1) eternal salvation by grace alone without any supposed meritorious DEEDS on our part from 2)the eternal results of what we DO in this life. Eternal life is therefore seen as a gift (Greek: doran) by grace alone through faith in Christ, but rewards for our deeds are seen as that which is earned (made possible only by God's grace-given opportunity to obey and serve Him). That is, God graciously offers to save us eternally if we believe in Jesus Christ alone for everlasting life and then graciously allows believers to meritoriously serve Him so that He can graciously dispense rewards in the form of acclamation, honor, an inheritance IN the future Kingdom, and/or an inheritance OF the future Kingdom that will follow Christ's Second Advent.
--- The Outer Darkness into which carnal believers will be relegated is not Hell, but is rather their exclusion from PARTICIPATION in the joyous Marriage Feast (celebration) of the Lamb (i.e., at the "wedding feast" to be held only for the faithful believers soon after the Rapture event of the Church). The celebration will be attended only by worthy believers who have overcome the world by faith and by subsequent steadfast faithfulness.
--- This excellent, astute, and detailed explanation of future rewards puts to rest the Reformed Theology doctrine of the "Perseverance of the Saints" as an necessary condition for validating that a person really has eternal or everlasting life, as promised, when (s)he believes. It also disallows any loss of salvation as seen from the Arminian viewpoint. It shows that God is 1) FAITHFUL to His promise to eternally save those who believe in Christ for eternal life (in that the possession of eternal life cannot be relinquished by failure in the Christian life) as well as 2)FAIR in His judgments of our deeds (2 Cor 5:10). Failure in the Christian life leads to loss of Christ's acclaim, rewards, and an inheritance in the Kingdom of God and of Christ. It is the reason that some believers will justly and fairly be excluded from the celebration of the Marriage Feast into "Outer Darknes" away from the "party lights," so to speak, of that glorious and joyful occasion. Such exclusion will result in severe regret (crying and grinding of teeth, etc.) on the part of believers who ignorantly follow the desires of the flesh in this world.
--- As a result of this distinction, Christians should be motivated by the promise of great and eternal rewards as well as the possibility of loss of such rewards and should, with all gravity, follow the Savior by self-denial and co-suffering with Christ and for His cause so that they might inherit the Kingdom with Him and co-reign with Him in it.

Short, Sharp, and Thought-Provoking

This short book wastes no time in cutting to the chase: contemplating why we enjoy what we enjoy helps us recognize and better understand environmental and market forces that influence our dispositions to certain types of entertainment. The author does not suggest that readers should adopt more "high-brow" forms of enjoyment (e.g. reading complex critical theory) and forsake certain other types of mindless enjoyment (e.g. playing Candy Crush). Rather, Dr. Bown places all enjoyment on a level playing field to be analyzed as more or less equal enjoyments. This approach encourages introspection from the reader into what our enjoyments are without the red herrings of analyzing how worthless some of our enjoyments are. Although Dr. Bown does provide several helpful case studies, he provides them as cairns along the path to understand the point he's getting at.

For example, we all know that playing games on our phones is usually an unproductive waste of time. But had this book made that its central focus, we'd likely miss the larger themes of enjoyment in general. All enjoyment. We'd agree that Instagram is a waste of time, vow to spend less time on our phones, and then let the new goal slowly deteriorate and disappear within a week of finishing the book. However, by not ranking or disparaging certain enjoyments, this book helps the reader recognize that even the book we're reading provides a certain enjoyment that needs to be analyzed. Why did we buy this book? What environmental and market forces drove us to purchase this book, and what is it about us that enjoys reading it?

This is an excellent essay that deserves to be read. There were a couple typos on the first few pages that contributed to a somewhat improvised feel of the book, but that only added to the experience of reading what seemed to be a thoroughly-thoughtful profound stream of thought on enjoyment.

I haven't read much critical theory, but this wasn't written for professors. This spoke well to my layman understanding, and it has encouraged me to read more critical theory.

Both an excellent path into contemporary theory - with sharp and incisive views into Deleuze, Lacan and Zizek - and a key to understanding how, to paraphrase Ray Bradbury, the so-called "Machineries of Joy" have come to define the modern subject in this late capitalist global network.

If you were to ask me to recommend a book that gives you high theory and couples it with 'everyday analysis' - so you can see both its relevance and application to ordinary life I would thoroughly recommend this book.

So, give me an example, you say. Tell me something more.

Well, the core analysis develops one crucial insight in modern post marxian-psychoanalytic thought (inspired largely by Zizek) - namely that ideology hides itself in open sight amongst our practices of 'enjoyment'. Playing 'unproductive' mobile Apps - Angry birds, Candy Crush, etc - tells us something about how the regulation of our pleasures and 'escape trajectories' from working life actually are carefully managed and controlled by the very system that they would ostensibly be escaping from. I work, you work. We all get bored. Work is boring but necessary. So I escape it - I slip off into Facebook, get our smartphone and play some 'useless' game. Innocent, eh?

But here's a crucial insight: I'm not escaping. The space and time I spend preoccupied with these unproductive leisure activities, actually is part of the system I'm trying to escape from. Enjoyment is not enjoyment. Holidays are not holidays. Unproductive, pointless time-wasting mobile apps are not a 'relief', a welcome entry into a space outside of work. They are part of the machinery of work. They make me more productive. Because of them I can work harder and for longer hours.

Scary.

But entertainingly written. Showing great Shakespearean wit ("Brevity is the soul of wit") this lean book lets you see the man behind the curtain, controlling the great wizard of Oz.

It gives you a glimpse behind the facade, pushing you to ask: where is that space of resistance - and who are all these stupid people playing games while I'm trying to discuss critical theory? (Actually this book has some very funny things to say about those who enjoy more 'productively' - you know: the critical theorists and ilk. Reminds me of a remark by David Harvey during a talk about how 'critical talk' can whip up a revolutionary fervour - but actually lead to nothing.)

And perhaps therein lies its subtle and most profound challenge. How to claim back that space. The space we have let capitalism colonise.

Enjoyable and educational

‘Enjoying it’ is a small book but it gives you a lot to think about.

With only a basic knowledge of psychoanalysis and critical theory I was concerned that this may be out of my league but I found it very insightful, well-argued and in most places entertaining. I did get a little bogged down in the references to some contemporary theorists (Deleuze, Lacan and Zizek) at times but this is a book that is very much centred on everyday life.

I was soon questioning my assumed superiority because I choose to read intellectual texts and listen to Radio 4 whilst my teenagers play computer games and spend hours on snap chat.

The text argues that all forms of enjoyment just serve to prop up the capitalist system – even when we think we are being subversive. It turns out that I am not as superior as I thought I was.

Nevertheless, it was the analysis of enjoyment itself that I found most fascinating. Especially the modern phenomenon of having to be seen to be enjoying yourself at all times and to let everyone know this on social media. This really struck a chord with me.

Personal happiness is seen as of prime importance in modern society so perhaps we should re-examine what makes us happy and question why and if we are really enjoying it!
