Good background into the mind and method of John Connolly

I am a big fan of the author's Charlie Parker series, and had read the previous Nocturnes volume. I very much enjoyed reading the chapters about the beginning of his career, and even went back and re-read (again) his first novel - "Every Dead Thing" - after I discovered it WAS his first novel

What can I say? I love his work. He is in a class of writing all his own and he is very, very good. He writes like a highbrow version of Stephen King. There's horror, but you have to think about it.

A Collection of Tales From A True Master!

Night Music: Nocturnes Volume Two is an unbelievably wonderful collection of tales from a master.

The only other short form John Connolly story I've read is The Wanderer in Unknown Realms, which I loved. Turns out that's part of a larger narrative: The Fractured Atlas-Five Fragments. This is a group of 5 tales of varying lengths involving an ancient, evil text. Who doesn't love a good story about an evil book? And here, there's 5, (count them, 5!),and they are simply delicious.

Two of the other stories here are connected: The Caxton Private Lending Library and Book Depository and Holmes on the Range: A Tale of the Caxton Private Library and Book Depository. These are killer pieces about characters in books coming to life and in what type of places they reside. I want to go there for a nice long visit.

One of the reasons this collection is so perfect for me is all these stories about books. And book lovers. And book characters. And evil books. I can't resist!

Plus, Connolly's characterization and writing are beyond compare. I loved this passage from the story The Wander in Unknown Realms :

"There was a benignity to him that I liked, a happy disengagement from the futilities and ugliness of life's toil that one encountered in those who had discovered a way to take something for which they had only love and gratitude, and make it their means of support."

Ain't that the truth?

This was a lovely, dark collection. It ends with a sort of autobiographical essay called I Live Here ,which was enjoyable and included insights into John Connolly's boyhood experiences with horror fiction and movies.

I found every story in this volume worthy of my attention and I can't say enough good things about it. My highest recommendation!

About the Author
Timothy M. Dornemann is the director of educational programs for Sports Performance Sciences International, an organization that includes International Performance Sciences and PowerRev, which provide strength and conditioning training and education domestically and internationally. A member of the United States Sports Academy s national faculty, Dornemann holds certifications as a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and as a performance-enhancement specialist (PES) from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Alexander Mikheev, Ph.D. is the director of the Scientific Research Institute of Physical Culture and Sport of the Republic of Belarus. He is also a member of the Scientific-Technical Council of the Ministry of Sport and a professor at the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture. He began studying the effects of vibration training in 1984 under pioneering vibration researcher Vladimir Nazarov at the Belarusian Institute of Physical Culture.

Not all vibrators are the same.

Quite brief. But will indicate that the vast majority of "Vibration Exercisers" are NOT following THESE METHODS. And if they don't then what are the designs based on? Shows how to adapt a Vib.plate or a Vib.overhead suspension to exercise many muscles of the body.

ehhh, maybe if I had a vibration machine I would have liked it more. The better part of the book for me was the discussion and pictures of suspension training

Delightfully Endearing Read

This was an absolutely adorable story. Parker, recently widowed when his husband was killed in a motorcycle accident, hires nanny, Jake, to help care for his son, Nate. As the three individuals grow closer, Parker and Jake develop feelings for one another. However, Parker feels like he's somehow betraying the memory of his deceased husband, Darren, by pursuing anything with Jake.

I found all three of the main characters in this story delightful. Jake was the perfect tall, dark and handsome hero who swoops and and helps a broken family finally heal and move forward. Nate brought a smile to my face and was very cute.

A Nanny for Nate was a quick read that definitely left me with warm and fuzzy feelings. :)

If you like a good Manny story....Read this!!

When I first saw that this book had been re-released I was certain that even if I hadn't read it, I surely must own it. After checking my Archived items and even My Orders I was forced to concede that maybe I really hadn't ever purchased it. Why not? It was certainly right up my alley-----a Manny coming to the rescue of a harried Dad. Said Dad finds the Manny very attractive but fights and denies his feelings. Child(ren ) blossom under his care. Then the Big Conflict!! What the conflict is and how it is resolved is the basis of each of these stories. Yeah I get it...so why hadn't I bought it?
I don't know!! But I've rectified that oversight. I made a point of buying it for real this time. And it was worth all my head scratching.
The characters draw you into the story. They have you rooting for them, yelling at them, being made privy to their secrets. You know/hope there is a HEA coming but what route would it take? Then to complicate things even further you have a grieving father who hasn't moved past the angry stage. Who's suffering from survivor's guilt. Who isn't willing to let go....even though his head and heart are telling him two different things. And then there his adorable & sullen son, who misses his Daddy too.
If you like your Nannies to be Mannies then you're sure to enjoy this story.

Enjoyable reading

if you have loved once and lost that love, you might think that it was all the fate had in store for you. Some even feel the survivor guilt and will not allow themselves to hope for a new chance. But sometimes the Fate insists on you taking that chance. Or is it your son playing the role of Fate? Parker is a widower who needs a live-in nanny. The choice falls on Jake - obviously a very good choice, too. He fills the void in Parker's and Nate's lives and finds the love of his life at the same time. I was just questioning why Parker continued to use his old wedding ring 4 months into the new relationship (it is said he took it from his finger before burying it on the grave). In my mind it is a bit offensive towards Jake.

About the Author

Sanjiv Gokhale, Ph.D., P.E., F. ASCE,, Professor of Civil Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Vanderbilt University, has taught construction project management courses to undergraduate and graduate students since 2001. He is the recipient of the 2009 Distinguished Professor award by the Construction Industry Institute (CII) and received the Teaching Excellence award from the School of Engineering, Vanderbilt University, in 2005. Dr. Gokhale is coauthor of Trenchless Technology: Pipeline and Utility Design, Construction, and Renewal (McGraw-Hill Professional, 2005).

Thomas C. Gormley, LEED-AP, Associate Professor and Director of the Commercial Construction Management program at Middle Tennessee State University, recently started teaching after nearly 40 years in hospital construction. He has worked as a contractor, an owner, and a program manager in the US, Europe and the Middle East. He is working on his dissertation for his PhD in Environmental Engineering at Vanderbilt University. For over 10 years, Mr. Gormley has served on the committee that writes the Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Healthcare Facilities―the nationally recognized standard for hospitals. He is a Board member of the American Hospital Association’s Certification Center and served on the committee that wrote the test for Certification of Health Care Constructors, which is a nationally recognized certification for builders.

• Chapter1: What’s Different About Hospitals. I thought the chapter was a good overview, but missed the opportunity to highlight and address the intense political, emotional and reality drama that surrounds the healthcare facility environment. We in the industry often joke about hospitals being the first settings for television soap operas (and there are reasons for that) but in all seriousness the healthcare construction manager needs to be acutely aware of the dynamics that are embedded in the hospital environment that simply don’t exist in other facility settings.
• Chapter 2: Codes and Regulations. The discussion on accreditation organizations should perhaps mention other orgs that have “deemed status” from CMS. These include AOA and more recently DNV, which has been gaining on TJC in terms of numbers of facilities accredited. While the purpose of these various accreditation orgs is generally the same, the codes/standards as well as the survey processes they use vary widely, and the construction manager should be aware which org any particular healthcare system is using, and the various impact on project delivery.
• Chapter 5: Healthcare Facility Justification and Capacity: The conclusions drawn at the end of this chapter are , I believe, debatable. The degree to which the health care industry has “evolved over time to a highly refined process” may have been true up to a point some years ago, but I would submit that healthcare reform (both organic and legislatively driven) has unwound some of the processes built up over the decades. Changing demographics, uncertain and varied reimbursement pictures and the velocity of change in both have unseated some standard planning processes. While I don’t disagree with the pretext that the most effective management of project cost is done in the early planning stages, I would caution against any characterization of the planning process as mature.
• Chapter 7: Project Delivery Methods for Healthcare Projects: While this chapter gives a good overview of a difficult-to-capture subject, I believe the description of the A/E team selection, as well as of the deliverables that can be expected from those professionals, are drastically oversimplified and may give the construction manager the impression that both are rote processes with very little variation. The opposite is actually true: we are seeing more variation in both selection processes and the nature and detail of deliverables than ever before.
• Chapter 8: Modern Project Delivery Methods for Healthcare Projects:
o Page 161 discusses BIM, but I believe way understates the impact of BIM technology and usage on the entire planning, design and construction process. The construction management student should be led to believe that BIM is changing the entire process from the inside out, which I believe it is.
o Pages 162 and 163 discuss the impact of prefabrication on a typical project, and that discussion could benefit from adding some perspective of the impact of prefabrication on the design phase, where elements of the design process many times must be pulled out of sequence in order to facilitate an effective prefabrication program.
• Chapter 9: Challenge of Additions and Renovations: A good overview of the challenges. Consider making the reader aware of the need to verify existing utility distribution before consideration of demolition of portions of an existing campus or building that was built in multiple phases. Often utilities feed from the “oldest to the newest” in terms of progression of construction, and demolition of the oldest buildings first can present major challenges as utilities feeding through those buildings might feed other buildings that are to remain.
• Chapter 10: Mechanical and Electrical Systems in Hospitals: The chapter could benefit by some awareness of the potential impact on Hospital Acquired Infections by the HVAC systems, particularly with respect to airflow and pressure relationships. HAI issues are discussed well in Chapter 12, but the direct connection to HVAC systems isn’t highlighted. Also, Chapter 10 provides some general discussion on project delivery methodologies that seems to overlap (and contradict to some degree) the discussion in earlier chapters
• Chapter 11: Medical Technology and Information Systems. Chapter provided good definitions of medical equipment and function, but didn’t speak to the critical process of planning, specifying, purchasing and coordinating utilities and space requirements for medical equipment. This could almost justify a paragraph of it’s own, with the potential impact to overall project budget, planning, design, coordination and installation. While there is some discussion of planning for IT systems, I could see little provided for equipment.
• I may have missed this, but didn’t see any discussion on exterior skin, and the necessary planning and design required. Envelopes now touch many disciplines from structure to architecture to HVAC, and must be evaluated carefully. Where to place vapor barriers is but one subtle but potentially impactful detail.

Good summary of a complex topic

This book provides a very good summary of the complexities involved in healthcare construction as stated in the previous reviews. As a construction project manager and licensed architect looking to break into the health care construction field, I found this book to be a good starting point but only a starting point. Continued research into the AHCA, Joint Commission and NFPA99 are necessary to even begin to become versed in this complex topic.
