Interesting but a headache to read...

You have to go throught about 100 pages before getting to the actual Barents 3 voyages. Those earlier attempts at reaching Cathia are especially a pain to follow, being a translation from Dutch into old style-english slang. I must admid that I quitted after 45 pages or so and a diet of Tylenol.

I then directly went to the first of the 3 Barents attempts.

If I'm not mistaken, William Barents was the first European explorer to experience the Artic winter. His party did so in crude manner, for example driving away bears they could have used as nourrishment. Reading the accounts of Barents voyages, driven by economic goals, put into perpectives all those other expeditions that were to follow. The accounts of Barents 3 trips to the Arctic regions are taken from Gerrit DeVerr diaries, who, let me put it this way, does not posses the litterary talent of a Robert Falcon Scott.

For exemple, he rarely mentions the names of his companions, which makes it hard for the reader to fell for them, even if they all go through a living hell. Bottom line, if your are a die-hard scholar of Arctic's story of exploration, this book might be of some interest to you. However, if you are solely interested in stories of survivals in harsh environment, you can find
far more interesting accounts in Frederick Cook, Douglas Mawson, Ernest Shackelton or Adolphus Greely experiences in the Polar Worlds.

Good Addition to the Library of the Young Reader

"Eight Ate" by Marvin Terban. Illustrated by Giulio Maestro. Sub-titled, "A Feast of Homonym Riddles". Clarion Books, 1982.
This book plays on the wealth of homonyms (words which sound alike but mean different things) in the English language. First, a question, (i.e. a riddle) is asked, and then the answer, dependent upon a homonym, is given. For example, on the back cover, the riddle is: "What do you call a smelly chicken?"
Answer, playing on the homonyms: "A foul fowl!"
The entire book is filled with this type of word play: the riddle, with the answer in homonyms nicely illustrated by Giulio Maestro. All of the clever use of words makes for funny reading aloud. The illustrations keep the attention of the children who are too young read, even though they may not fully understand the joke embedded in the homonyms. This book is a worthwhile addition to the library of the young reader.

This book is useful for learning the difference between words that sound the same, but are spelled differently. The jokes and riddles are described by pictures to give clues to the answers. This book is a great way for kids to understand the different meanings behind words that sound the same. As someone who confuses they're and there, I found this book fun and helpful, and I'm in college! This would also help teachers in the Language Arts field. By creating fun use for words, Terban brings forth knowledge needed to understand the English Language.

Laugh out loud funny for the whole family!!!

Normally I don't write reviews. After searching for a book for my son, I stumbled upon this one. He pulls this out every few days and takes a read as if it is new information. I just love the way this book makes him want to learn and know more about words. He has thus graduated to similes and metaphors and he is just 6!!! This book is in black and white, which for us adds to the mystery of determining what the pictures are saying. The ease of simple sentences is another plus. We carry this with us to extended family and enjoy the riddle-like questions. This turned into a full fledged game against groups of family members at once! I'm glad to say I wasn't the only one dusting the cobwebs off my brain while racing against younger opponents. What a surprise! Most delightful and impressive!! Would like to see more with the same structure. Also, a note that having the answers at the bottom of each page sure makes a little fellow feel very in charge of his knowledge. Well done!!! So grateful for such a quality book. I am about to order other texts by the author. Don't change a thing!

With the creation of the Wehrmacht in 1935, new types of uniforms were instituted. This being the Felduniform for the Heer and the Kleinen Dienstanzug for the Luftwaffe. Both underwent varying modifications during the war, resulting in a vast array of different types and variations, of which most were based on the previous model. However, not every modification of a certain uniform piece resulted in a new Felduniform or Kleinen Dienstanzug.

The German High Command had hoped to have captured Moscow by October, 1941, after having fought a so-called blitzkrieg. At the beginning of Unternehmen Barbarossa, the blitzkrieg was quite successful, with advances of over 40 kilometers a day. However, it was suddenly grounded to a halt by the unexpected arrival of the autumn, which announced a period of heavy rainfall. This rainfall turned the Russian roads, which were vital for the German advance, into mud pools, demobilising the Germans forces completely. The once so unstoppable blitzkrieg had changed into a so-called Stelungskrieg, a war of positions, which would last until at least spring of the following year, as the circumstances wouldn't allow new offensives and military operations until then. Once the Sclammperiode, the mud season, changed into winter, it became painfully clear that the German forces were insufficiently prepared for the harsh Russian winter. It was planned that Moscow would have been captured before winter by blitzkrieg tactics; hence, no proper winter gear was available.

Its not that the German Army didn't have winter uniforms (they had been part of their issue since the creation of the Wehrmacht in 1935), they just didn't bring them along when they invaded the former Soviet Union. Further complicating this problem was Generalquartiermeister des Heeres Eduard Wagner's decision to withhold orders to start production and the distribution of adequate winter garments in late, 1941. Hence, the Heer was ill-equipped for the harsh conditions of the Russian winter, leading many soldiers to freeze to death.

But once this situation was fixed, successive Russian winters transformed the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front from the fast-moving technologically advanced force of the blitzkrieg years and Operation BARBAROSSA into one that slowly became "de-modernized", less mobile and more defense-orientated, although the Wehrmacht's growing reliance upon defensive operations was in any case virtually inevitable in light of the burgeoning strength of the Red Army from late 1942. However, the experience of combat during the Russian winter immeasurably hardened many of the soldiers and units who fought on the Eastern Front, significantly enhancing their
effectiveness when they were later engaged elsewhere-including against the Anglo-U.S. forces in the West after June, 1944.

This is the only book on winter uniforms you will ever need to own.

This is an excellent, well written book. The amount of detail regarding all aspects of winter uniforms used by the army and luftwaffe is astonishing! Everything from regulations and examples of using newspaper as insulation to the issuing of trench coats and reversible snow suits. There is also a section detailing the different types of camouflage patterns used for the snow suits. The pictures are very detailed on every uniform item with both modern shots of the authors collection as well as multiple period pictures for each item discussed. I have spent hours scrutinizing the period pictures alone since I haven't seen the majority of them before. In short, this is a book to own. This book has a permanent spot in my library.

The "I Ching" of Architecture.

An excellent introduction to architecture. However, I liked the old horizontal format better. The new edition has all the same illustrations but its vertical formal isn't as compelling. Ching is the master of free-hand sketching. In this book he covers the basic principles of architecture with copious illustrations and an easy to follow progression of ideas. It is great for first year students and frustrated architects alike. My only word of warning is that once you buy one of his volumes on architecture, it is hard to resist the others.

Excellent primer

Those who have panned this book weren't looking for insight into the thought process of architectural design. This book is not a cookbook, but a primarily graphical introductory intended to start the architecture student thinking how architects think.

I'm not technically an architecture student, but rather an architecture design "hobbyist". I found this book very useful as far as helping me to look at the design process in new ways, and to better understand the various historical (and contemporary) methods/techniques used to formulate architectural designs.

This book is a textbook, not a 5 lb. coffee table glossy.

An Excellent Update! Required Reading for anyone owning a guitar.

Dan Erlewine's latest edition of the Guitar Player Repair Guide is a worthy update. There are numerous additions and updates anyone familiar with the previous editions should check out. If you are new to the guitar, this book is the maintenance and repair guide than will help you maintain your investment, and even give you great tips on how to hod-rod, customize or fix your guitar.

The book is organized and logically arranged with Basic, DIY and Deep sections in each chapter. Electric, Acoustic and Bass guitars are all covered with detailed narrative and clear pictures.

Even if you are not up to jobs like fret work or truss rod adjustments, this book will prepare you to talk with your friendly neighborhood guitar repair guy about getting your guitar back to its former glory.

Very highly recommended. Make this your first purchase for your guitar dedicated bookshelf (doesn't everyone have those?).

Good for intermediate, bad for beginners

The book provides amazing detail on all aspects of maintaining and repairs guitars. If you have at least intermediate guitar experience its a great book for guitar upkeep. However for casual users and anyone who is hoping to get into this type of repair look elsewhere. It gives little explanation for those with a lack of basic knowledge and you'll spend more time looking up diagrams and terminology then reading the book.

The write is slightly biased towards certain guitars, which while popular and common, are not owned by everyone. Chapters that should be basic universal guitar help are used to spout particular brands and their specific upkeep which doesn't help those on off brand guitars. If you own a Fender or Gibson you'll be set but most other brands are left in the wayside

To summarize good for more experienced users, bad for those starting out. Good for anyone owning a guitar who wants upkeep help. Better for anyone owning a Fender or Gibson. Despite the negative comments if you have the basics down this book provides excellent tools for items as basic as cleaning your finish to repairing rotting tuners. A great book for a serious guitarist to own.

Honey-sweet but never cloying, this debut by nonfiction author Kidd (The Dance of the Dissident Daughter) features a hive's worth of appealing female characters, an offbeat plot and a lovely style. It's 1964, the year of the Civil Rights Act, in Sylvan, S.C. Fourteen-year-old Lily is on the lam with motherly servant Rosaleen, fleeing both Lily's abusive father T. Ray and the police who battered Rosaleen for defending her new right to vote. Lily is also fleeing memories, particularly her jumbled recollection of how, as a frightened four-year-old, she accidentally shot and killed her mother during a fight with T. Ray. Among her mother's possessions, Lily finds a picture of a black Virgin Mary with "Tiburon, S.C." on the back so, blindly, she and Rosaleen head there. It turns out that the town is headquarters of Black Madonna Honey, produced by three middle-aged black sisters, August, June and May Boatwright. The "Calendar sisters" take in the fugitives, putting Lily to work in the honey house, where for the first time in years she's happy. Adult/High School-Lily Owens, 14, is an emotionally abused white girl living with her cold, uncaring father on a peach farm in rural South Carolina. The memory of her mother, who was accidentally killed in Lily's presence when she was four, haunts her constantly. She has one of her mother's few possessions, a picture of a black Madonna with the words, Tiburon, South Carolina, written on the back. Lily's companion during her sad childhood has been Rosaleen, the black woman hired to care for her. Rosaleen, in a euphoric mood after the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, goes to town to register to vote and insults one of the town's most racist residents. After she is beaten up and hospitalized, Lily decides to rescue her and they go to Tiburon to search for memories of her mother. There they are taken in by three black sisters who are beekeepers producing a line of honey with the Black Madonna label. While racial tensions simmer around them, the women help Lily accept her loss and learn the power of forgiveness. There is a wonderful sense of the strength of female friendship and love throughout the story.

A Heartwarming Read

The Secret Life of Bee's is an enduring story set on a southern bee farm. The characters will enlighten and warm your heart. The Secret Life of Bee's is similar to many southern stories; however, the bee lore that Kidd interjects throughout makes the book unique and interesting. The Secret Life of Bee's is a heartwarming, feel good read. There are universal lessons about family and self throughout.
The main character, Lily Owens is fleeing an abusive father and an all-consuming truth surrounding her mother's death. The Secret Life of Bee's is set in the 1960's when racial tensions and violence were at an all time high. Lily and her caretaker Rosaleen, leave town after a violent encounter with racists while Rosaleen was attempting to exercise some of her newly granted freedoms.
Since the death of her mother, Lilly has a few precious clues as to her last days. The clues lead Lily and Rosaleen to Tiburon, South Carolina where they meet the `calendar sisters', May, June, and August Boatwright. The Boatwright sisters operate a successful Bee farm. Lily and Rosaleen are welcomed to the farm with open arms. Through her work on the farm, Lily is able to examine her past and begin to trust as she finds love again.
The Secret Life of Bee's is the story of mothers. The reader will travel with Lily as she experiences each of the four remarkable women ~ Rosaleen, May, June, and August. Each of these women is a teacher and guide to Lily. It is through her experiences that she is able to discern that a mother is more than just a biological bond.
A great debut for Sue Monk Kidd. I cannot help thinking that I would have loved to learn more about Boatwright sisters...maybe there is room for another story!

I gave this book to my 15 year old daughter to read and she came back after finishing it exclaiming, " All those mothers!" Motherhood and its powerful influence (both good and bad) on each of us is a central theme to the story and the quest for all that a mother implies (safety, acceptance, unconditional love)draws the reader immediately to Lily Owen, the 14 year old narrator. I thought this book had beautiful imagery, a nice balance of goodness overcoming loss, and most of all conceded to the power of redemption. Sue Monk Kidd did a wonderful job weaving the racial tensions of the 1960's into the voice of the main character and bringing us, the reader, along for the ride as the young girl discovers what it feels like to be discriminated against herself, the dangers of racial inequality, and the basic human elements that bind us to each other despite color or class. This story is about a journey of growth and addresses that fundamental need in each of us to find answers to the questions of who we are. I have found, months later, that The Secret Life of Bees is still with me and I recommend it over and over again.

As sweet as honey.

I mean, literally, this book is as sweet as honey, which is spread throughout the book. I now have a whole new appreciation for the work bees do. But while bees and honey may be the back drop to this wonderful story, there is much more. It starts with the painful memory of a young adolescent girl, Lily, who discovers bees in her wall, and these bees and some belongings of her deceased mother lead her on a path of discovery. Lily, as narrator, tells a wonderful joyous and painful story, filled with many life lessons. The ideas that we all have a mother inside of us to be discovered and that life isn't perfect are good reminders. This is a wonderful book, one that is hard to put down. It tugs at one's heart in many ways and Sue Monk Kidd brings the characters to life in a very realistic way.l

I am not from the south and did not run away from home, but I grew up in the 1960s and spent much time in a neighborhood where mothers were very important. Like Lily, I was fortunate to be surrounded by many loving mothers who looked after all the kids on our street. This book reminded me of that time.

I definitely recommend this book
