Interesting but a headache to read...

You have to go throught about 100 pages before getting to the actual Barents 3 voyages. Those earlier attempts at reaching Cathia are especially a pain to follow, being a translation from Dutch into old style-english slang. I must admid that I quitted after 45 pages or so and a diet of Tylenol.
I then directly went to the first of the 3 Barents attempts.
If I'm not mistaken, William Barents was the first European explorer to experience the Artic winter. His party did so in crude manner, for example driving away bears they could have used as nourrishment. Reading the accounts of Barents voyages, driven by economic goals, put into perpectives all those other expeditions that were to follow. The accounts of Barents 3 trips to the Arctic regions are taken from Gerrit DeVerr diaries, who, let me put it this way, does not posses the litterary talent of a Robert Falcon Scott.
For exemple, he rarely mentions the names of his companions, which makes it hard for the reader to fell for them, even if they all go through a living hell. Bottom line, if your are a die-hard scholar of Arctic's story of exploration, this book might be of some interest to you. However, if you are solely interested in stories of survivals in harsh environment, you can find
far more interesting accounts in Frederick Cook, Douglas Mawson, Ernest Shackelton or Adolphus Greely experiences in the Polar Worlds.
